I wish Nikon would have announced a new model D710 based on the proven D700 platform w/24 MP, and the same 51 point AF system. Of course it would be a bit more expensive, but I think they would fly off of the shelves and would be cheaper to produce & compete very well with the Canon Eos 5 MK III

I don't think you'd be disappointing with the D610.

Not entirely true, at least in relation to the lenses. The sensor density of the D800 is lower than that of the D700 for example which makes the D800 more forgiving of the glass quality.

No, that's incorrect. The D800 has 3 times the pixel density of the D700 (36MP vs 12MP on the same size sensor).

And your glass needs to be good to take advantage of that extra resolution. Thom Hogan's review of the D800 talks about this at some length...

That said, I'm in the "waiting for D400" group.

There is no D400 for one obvious reason; Nikon is trying to do away with pro level DX format in order to push buyers into higher priced FX lenses. To anyone thinking about buying a new D610, I would advice listening to the Country song "Dust on The Bottle" by David Lee Murphy. Just substitute the Word Sensor for Bottle, and you will know what I am suggesting.

There is a D400 on the horizon. When? Soon ™.

Hate to say this but honestly there isnt any real need for a pro DX body that cant be done with a D7100. Only difference is a larger body and more FPS buffer space and 51 point (D300) vs 39 point Matrix Metering. The 2 field photographers at Timbers games (MLS) have traded in their D300 bodies for D7100 bodies to go on their 300mm and 600mm lenses.

They didnt see any benefit sticking with a "prosumer DX body" D300 that wasnt directly made better by the switch to the D7100.

Slip of the pen, I meant the D7100 of course, I wouldn't compare with an obsolete camera.

Ah, that makes sense, no worries :)

Other people were talking about the old D700, so I didn't automatically think it was a typo.

Don't see what the big deal is about the d600. My sensor gets dirty so do my lenses and so does the body. So what do I do? Whine, bitch and complain? No, I Just clean my gear. Takes a few minutes. What's the big deal???

You my friend, can't see the forest for the trees... They used the 7100 because the is no D400. A pro body, for those that appreciate such things offers much more than bigger size. I'll leave you to research the reasons... Then you'll understand why some of us would like to see a d400.

Since money is no problem why not just sell all your gear and switch to a company that will fill your needs, if one exhists. If not I guess you're sol.................

I think I may just do that...Canon seems to have captured the professional market over the last 10 years. That 5 MkIII is looking better and better.

Well this would be a costly switch for me. However that 65mm MP-E Macro makes me drool.

This update is because of oil/ dust problems I am sure. Seems like a stupid move to me. They are just pissing off their D600 customers and are sure to have many moving to the Canon camp. I would like to see the percentage of D600 owners who have had oil/dust problems vs those who have not. Anyone out there have any ideas? I have been a Nikon owner for many, many years but this problem and this move really disturbs me. This is not at all like the Nikon company I have known.

I, for one, had no dust or oil issues and I've had my D600 for about 11 months. It's irritating to see the intro of the 610. I'm feeling obsolete after a $2000+ investment. I love the camera and am still learning, but I'm getting tempted to sell in in favor of an 800e which is likely what I should have bought to begin with. What I am going to be sure to do is get it into nikon before the warrantee is up for an unneeded cleaning because they throw in all manner of service on the same warrantee ticket. Nice.

Are you absolutely sure about this? I too have had no problems so I would opt to leave well enough alone. You never know who is going to get their hands on your camera. It may come back with problems that you didn't have in the first place. How many have sent their D600 in and received it back without the problem fixed. I wanted the 800e in the beginning but finances dictated the D600. Hope you are correct in your findings. I wish you good luck!

You'll get a new shutter mechanism on your D600 when Nikon services it.

I think the D600/D610 was never intended to match the build quality and ergonomics of a pro body. It was designed to bring FX within reach of the enthusiast budget market. It's simply a budget FX camera. You get what you pay for.
