Nikon's "new" D 610...such a disappointment !

I have been wanting to upgrade my D300s for the past year. Since Nikon is not announcing anything about a D400, I've been getting excited about going FX. Once you get use to the feel, build quality and ergonomics of a pro body, the move to a prosumer body like the D610 feels like a step backward...
I wish Nikon would have announced a new model D710 based on the proven D700 platform w/24 MP, and the same 51 point AF system. Of course it would be a bit more expensive, but I think they would fly off of the shelves and would be cheaper to produce & compete very well with the Canon Eos 5 MK III

Wouldn't the 800e be a valid comparison? A little less $s

No, at 36 MP the D800e has becoe too expensive unless you are a professional making mony with your photography. In addition to the high initial expense of approx $3000, the 800/800e requires the best FX glass costing $2000+ and an upgrade in computing power to process 36 MP RAW files. Even the battery grip is a rediculous $500+ dollars.

Valid points. The price comparisons I saw on these was roughly equal. I've been waiting on the mythical D400-- because I love the build and layout of the D300. The D7100 has all of those "shooting modes"-- but right now that seems to be the closest thing to what I would like. I'm saving for an upgrade now--so hopefully there will be a better alternative once I get the $s.

I too had been wanting to upgrade my D300s for about a year.

I too had thought about full frame, but there is a big gap in Nikon's line up at the moment. The D800/800E has for my type of photography, too many pixels, the D600 was too slow in the FPS department although I believe the D610 is faster and the 39 point AF system was never as good as the 51 point on the D300s.

I eventually bit the bullet a few days ago and went for the D7100.

I mainly shoot wildlife and birds in flight and so far I am impressed with the performance of this camera with my lenses.

I believe the mythical D400 will remain exactly that.

The D610 is just a marketing gimmick to separate the entire line from the D600 shutter oil issue. Sure it got a bit of a bump to its FPS but this isnt anything more than just replacing an existing product with known faults for the same product but with those faults removed. It was given a new name so people wouldnt have to deal with the worry of the oil problems that plagued the D600.

I agree with you. I finally decided to upgrade from my D300s with with a used D3. I have loved it. The D600 just didn't have the same feel to me and there was not a significant difference in the price of a used D700 and used D3.

I may end of going this route. It's probably just a picky personal preference, but I like the layout of the D300-- and the "professional feel" of the camera. The D7100 doesn't thrill me in that regard--but I could very well "get over it". Just a pet peeve, but I don't care for all of those modes, either-- (I know I don't have to use them!-- that's why it's called a "pet peeve".)

I think of instead praying for the D400 which will probably never come, I decided to pray for a D710 remake of the brloved D700. It would have 24 MP, NO VIDUO, and the same 51 point AF... From my lips to God's ears...

That certainly appears to be the case. That oil problem must have cost them more headaches than we might have imagined. The D600 is only around a year old. A short life for a major camera introduction.

A short succinct answer, but as valid as any other! I'd love to go FF, but I'm not prepared to spend the body and lens outlay necessary to get what I want right now.
