Use what you feel is comfortable and safe. I read somewhere on the net that some professionals feel that people look like amateurs when using the neck straps that say Nikon or Canon etc. on them. So what. The only thing I think might be a problem with this is that they aren't the most comfortable straps and that if the strap says Canon 1Dx or 5D Mk III or Nikon D4 on it, that it makes you a target for thieves. They can read too you know. LOL

I wanted to use my 6D Camera strap when I got my new camera. I was so proud of it. So I put it on my camera right away, had one scary incident getting tangled up with the strap, and I took it off before I broke my camera.

I have the same trouble with tape. I get all tangled up in it

I have a custom solution. I am short, have wide hips, and love to hike and prefer to keep my hands free. On a longer hike I will typically have my other lenses in a small backpack, along with my lunch, etc. However, my main camera support is a holster pack around my waist, with additional "suspender" supports around my neck. The camera, with a medium size lens fits inside the holster in front, and has a top zip for quick access which allows the camera strap to be also around my neck. Thus, my hips take the most weight and the OP/Tech rubberized strap takes care of the rest. The holster pack is Tamrac, which I've had for more than 20 years and carried my Nikons in Alaska, Siberia, Machu Picchu, Nepal, etc. And yes, I don't give a darn how I look. I am comfortable.

Is it a padded fanny pack? That would be great for getting your camera out quickly, but for me it would have to be padded. I tend to bang into things, and have little mishaps.

I have to strongly disagree with that. I worked hard and long to save up enough money for my camera, lenses, and other equipment, and although it's not "top of the line", to ME it's very precious. If I were to drop it due to not wearing the strap around my neck, and that caused partial or complete loss of the use of my camera, it would be a long time before I could buy another. So, I don't care HOW I look when I walk around with my camera, I'd rather feel that my camera is secure than to take any risks.

Do YOU carry your camera using the strap around your neck?

That belongs in the book that tells people to smoke to look cool; don't wear a seatbelt; wear an imitation plastic helmet on a motorcycle; go out in cold weather with shorts and a T-shirt.

We can decide what advice is good and what is not.

Typically over left shoulder with fingers loosely around the strap. If the strap breaks, slips or camera slides I can, and have, grabbed the strap reflexively preventing it from falling.

Oonly, that sounds WAY COOL to me.
For anybody that has a camera on their shoulder, in their hand, on a wrist strap or in some kind of detachable mechanism.
IT'S JUST A MATTER TIME, and you WILL, damage a camera. There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Put enough miles on it, and it's gonna happen, guaranteed.
Why do manufacturers ship with neck straps? It's the only way they can be sure the camera will never hit the ground, without operated error.

You can use ANY method you like, and there's no need to justify it or defend it. Just don't come crying to us, when your camera is laying on the ground, taking a picture, of you, with tears streaming down your face!!
We read those here from time to time.

If any of us have ever dropped a camera, it's not because we had it securely around our neck.

Just my 2cents. SS

PS, to Oonly, good luck with your unreliable method.

I forget it's there. It gets banged around that way. I listen to music while I photograph. I pulled my ear buds out for some reason and left them dangle. I dipped them in the water while I was shooting. That was the end of those earbuds. Good thing it wasn't my camera dangling.

When I am holding my camera I am more aware of it. I make a point to place it in my back pack while I'm doing something else. If I travel on foot for any distance, everything gets taken apart and placed in the back pack. I don't walk around with my camera in my hand or on my neck.

Most of the time, I shoot with my camera on my tripod. If the strap is attached to it, I tend to trip on it, or hook it on something and pull the tripod over.

I find lots of other ways to look geeky, just ask my kids.

Whoever said it doesn't look cool is an idiot! It's not about how you look it's about taking care of an expensive instrument and investment!

Yes, it is thickly padded. Don't know if current Tamrac models are still the same. This holster has very wide belt loops through which I fitted a thick web belt to secure around my waist. Thus, to "unharness" myself, I need to remove my neck straps, lay the holster on some support, and unclip the belt. The holster also has a hand grip so that you can carry it in your hand. The battleship grey fabric is tough and after all these years there are no nicks and the zippers are still sound. I am thinking of checking out the OP/Tech sling. However, they leave your cameras unprotected, whereas with the Tamrac, I've been out in the rain with no problems.

I'll hike all day with a 70mm - 200mm 2.8 lens on my camera. I use a Cotton Carrier Camera Vest with a Hand Strap on the camera.

I almost always wear mine around my neck, because I love looking incredibly uncool. LOL

I use the neck strap while holding the camera with my right hand. Being careful is "super cool".

Always around my neck! I would rather my camera be safe than to look "cool".
