Yep St3v3M, you got that right, so I do not understand that when you solve the problem that people keep on giving advice. :?: :?: :XD:
When I switched to W-7 I had a number of programs that were not 64 compatible. I followed the advice in another reference and set up my computer as the reference you gave describes. Yep, it works. Is it that people can not read and like to talk??

No SirLan, not at all, sort of a rant about forums that go on for 9 pages when the question was fully answered on page one. Like with this one with that "Oracle of Knowledge" EstherP, the very first to give an answer. No references were given. Two of us gave compatibility references so that the OP can go on using the excellent program that they have.
And yes, the OP did ask for advice on other programs. So in that I do sincerely apologize about the rant... although the rant is well justified in many cases.

Many people want to be helpful but don't have the time to read through all the comments, regardless of how many pages of them they are. Thus, they read the question and provide their answer.
you might want to download updates on your pc. that might help run the 32 bit program. I had that problem until the updates where installed. don't delete the program yet. have a 64 bit windows 7 and it runs all of my 32 bit programs.

What dpullum noted is likely the problem - not necessarily Corel, per se.
When Microsoft introduced 7 they did away with backward compatibility, as such, EXCEPT thru the Virtual machine which they made available with the Professional grade of 7.
Where Corel comes into play is if their program won't run on 64 bits. I had a couple with that problem and the makers eventually produced an upgrade to run on 64 bits.

I recently upgraded my computer to a Windows7 64bit. Works great HOWEVER: My digital painting software, a Corel product Painter 4 Essentials is incompatible. Bummer!
Corel was very unhelpful and only offered their high end program PainterX3 at $429. This is not an option for me at this time. In fact this puts me as an X-Corel customer.
I would appreciate input on your experiences with other software I can consider which will allow me to follow my passion for digital painting and portraits.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Did you actually try to install the program? If not go ahead and install it. After installation right click on the program icon, click properties, and then open the compatibility tab. Check the box that say Run in Compatibility mode for and select XP. I'll bet it will run. I have numerous programs are not supposed to be "compatible" with Windows 7 and they all run just fine. Let me know if this works.

Welcome o the "club!" Corel. About as helpful as a broken broomstick. Corel flipped me the bird when I inquired about Corel ver 11, I have on a XP 32 bit operation, would work on MicSft Ver.8, 64 bit, and wanted me to purchase something for over $300.00. NO THANKS. I'll unplug my XP from the internet and continue to do my Corel work on XP and then use Google Drive feature to X-fer my Corel finished product to the Windows 8 ver.

Yea... Since version 5.1 I have been using WordPerfect. When I do a Save while working on a document, the cursor jumps back to where I started working on it that day, sometimes several pages. It's not a major thing, just very annoying. All I could get out of Corel staff was "It doesn't do that on my machine!"
'fraid that Corel has lost one loyal customer over this, I am now happily using Microsoft Word Starter ;-)

Zoner photo studio 16 is a great new release.
Unfortunately, there comes a point where it's not worth it for a company to support older programs. Computer technology moves at a fast rate and upgrading of software has to go along with upgraded hardware. I just had to buy a new scanner because my old one doesn't work with Windows 8. It's annoying because there is nothing wrong with the old machine. C'est la vie, as they say.

Esther is probably right (as usual) - Painter Essentials is a 32bit application.
On C Drive you should have 2 folders, the first is "Program Files" and the second is "Program Files (x86)". It is the 2nd folder "Program Files (x86)" where Painter needs to be installed to. ALMOST all of my old XP applications run well from there, though there are one or two exceptions.
If your copy is in Program Files I would uninstall it completely and reinstall in the (x86) folder.

DebAnn, if you have still have the old scanner, take a look at VueScan at hamrick.com. He supports 2000+ scanners and encourages you to download and try before buying. The software resurrected my old flatbed that Epson was not interested in producing drivers for when I upgraded to Win7. Maybe you can keep it as a spare.
Thanks for the info, Hal.
