I have been a follower of this wonderful site for quite a while now and have learned so much. But now I find myself with a problem and would appreciate your advise.
My Seagate 4TB external drive failed during a backup to CrashPlan. So the recovered files include only the .xmp from LR4 and about 188 images, leaving about 4500 images lost. Seagate will charge $400. to recover the drive. I only need the 4500 images and feel very unhappy to have to pay that much. Any advise on how to recover these images? I have formatted all the cards, but only one has been overwritten. Seagate offers a DYI plan to try to recover them myself with a 45 page manual and then $99. fee for the key to unlock the images. The problem there is that the card that was overwritten has my only pics of Victoria Falls that I really want to recover. So, besides being very upset, I'm also confused and would appreciate suggestions and advise. Does anyone know a less expensive, easier way of recovering these images?
Thanks in advance,

Turn the hard drive 90 degrees (if it sits vertical, lay it down or vise versa) and see if it will work. Be prepared a head of time to copy the drive to another new drive. I have seen this work before. Do not know if this is the best idea.....
If you try it, hope this works!
I'm sure others will jump in.

The drive is totally dead. So how would I get access to the files?
If you can't get power to the drive it may be worth buying a caddy and taking the drive out of its original case.

Many hard drives have fuses pop to a local shop like msplin electronics in the UK you must have one and ask don't get conned into paying a fortune
I have been building computers since cp/m and dos 3.1.
I tried using a different base that I know works and the drive would still not spin up. Is that what you mean?
I apologize up front for having no tech knowledge.
Thanks for so many quick replies! Wow!
Yes that's what I meant. Do you have a PC repair shop near you ? Pop in and ask them?

I'm using the Quote reply and I think you are talking to me.
If the hard drive sits on your desk in a vertical position, then lay it down flat. Even try upside down. Be ready to copy to another drive if it starts working!

Added note: See what other replies you get as mine may not be popular and I have only seen done once.
Do the math. To recover 4500 images at a cost of $400 will come to about 9 cents per image, if another does the work.
Your precious images likely have a value higher than 9 cents each.
Still, looking only at dollars spent minus value per image may lead you to choke on the $400. Try a competent computer technician for a quote to do the same work.
For the future, you may wish to consider periodically doing a second backup of all your images to another external drive. 2TB portable external drives have dropped below $200. 4TB desktop external drives cost upward of $200.
The dollars spent on external drives for backup serves as insurance. You will thank yourself if and when you need it.
Good luck.
