I downloaded my authorized prelaunch version of Paintshop Pro X6 Ultimate. I havent had a lot of time to check out the new upgrades. I like what I see at first glance.
X6 comes with two versions, a 32 bit version and a 64 bit version. They both install at the same time and the installer puts two icons on your desktop, one to load and use the 32 bit version and one to load and use the 64 bit version. Why? Well, X6 does not include the famed NIK Efex Pro 3 plugin. Instead, it includes the Athentech Imaging Perfectly Clear plugin. Doesnt appear to be as useful as the NIK plugin. Dont uninstall X5 Ultimate if you have it installed. If you have X5 Ultimate installed it has the NIK plugin. You can point 32 bit X6 to the X5 plugins and they will work just fine. The X5 plugins are 32 bit and work only with the 32 bit version of X6 Ultimate. They will not work with the 64 bit version of X6 Ultimate. I am not sure what other differences are between 32 bit X6 and 64 bit X6 other than the 64 bit version is a little faster and maybe smoother. At this point I think the capabilities of both versions are the same. Overall, a quick glance at X6 Ultimate, it looks to be a winner and, again, worth the money. One major improvement that I saw was they have added a selection brush and an auto selection function. I also read that some improvement with the layering functions have been made. There has been some major improvement of the file/image management functions making it much easier to transition an image from management to adjustment and editing.
Let's use this thread to discuss observations, likes, dislikes, quirks, etc of X6 Ultimate to keep everything in one place. Post away.
I will post any other observations in the future as I jump into the workings of X6 Ultimate. Have a GREAT DAY!
I believe the biggest difference (in Photoshop) in 32-bit and 64-bit versions are that the 64-bit version will take advantage of more RAM memory when working with tif files that exceed 4GB in size. I still think (again in PS) that the psd files are hampered by the 4GB files size limit.
I'm assuming that PSP X6 64-bit is the same.
I downloaded the demo and started putting it through its paces.
The install seemed to go smooth. The program itself ran sluggishly and I considered uninstalling within 20 minutes. I noted that everything on my computer ran slowly after installing PSP X6, including PSP X5.
Having experience with PSP issues, I checked my running processes and noted that the installer was still loaded into memory. I killed the process and five minutes later got a message that there were no updates available.
Sigh. Typical for Corel.
Once that issue was solved, the 64bit version was smooth as silk. Overall, the program does seem faster. It ranges from a little faster to "Wow, that's fast!", depending on what functions were being used.
The selection brush is a much needed addition and works as well as it's Photoshop counterpart. Which is to say, sometimes it works great and other times it's frustrating.
Another great change is the ability to drag a photo from the navigator directly into your layers palette.
The final selling point for me is that it seems a bit more stable than X5 which I can still get to crash and freeze.
I just wish that they hadn't replaced Color Efex with Facefilter, or that there was a bigger price difference between the standard and ultimate versions.

The most likely reason Corel replaced Color Efex with Facefilter is the original developers of Color Efex had not upgraded their plugin for 64bit.
As for the other serious problems in resources and operational speed, wait for the next Service Upgrade where they fix these problems. They may even offer a discount.

Corel did not replace Color Efex with Facefilter. Facefilter 2 was a part of X5 Ultimate and Facefilter 3 remains as a part of X6 Ultimate. Color Efex was replaced with Athentech Imaging Perfectly Clear. Don't forget that, if you leave X5 Ultimate installed on your computer, you can point X6 Ultimate (32 bit version) to the X5 Ultimate plugin folder and Color Efex will run just fine.
I didn't have any problems per say with the downloads, except that it took a bit longer without me knowing that it was still working. I was disappointed that the Nik color Efex was not included but happy to see that I can point it to the x5 version. I will note that I did download the trail version for all the Nik collection and have been unsuccessful with it linking to any software of PSP (must be a user error).
I do like that it initially seems to be (the 64 bit version) faster. I will have to run it through the test of layers and effects and adjustments to see if it will stop in mid correction to save (which I did find annoying).
Perfectly Clear at initial run through seems to be a good add on that may help with some past processing.

Is there any sign of integration with Corel Aftershot Pro?

At a quick glance, I didn't see a way to integrate with any other program. You might check Aftershot Pro to see if there is a way to send an image directly to another editor program. I did a free trial of Aftershot Pro about 8 months ago but I don't recall any program integration. Paintshop Pro X6 Ultimate probably does everything that Aftershot Pro does and there is really no need for integration with another program except plugins. Sorry I can't help you out. Anyone else familiar with Aftershot Pro by Corel??
I'll have to check when I get home if you can intergrate (export) from Aftershot to x6...GP

GPoyner,
In the event you are not aware PSP has been in the process of creating new installation and program folders for each new version with the Ultra package. It is for this reason that many older plugins no longer work with an upgraded version containing Ultra packages.
To overcome this practice you will have to point PSP X-5 to an older program path for your Plugins.
One possible reason for doing this is to avoid duplicate plugins between older versions and newer versions. You may point PSP by using the "File > File Locations > Plugins. Make the appropriate selections and navigate to where your old PSP plugin file are located. Make very sure there are no duplicates in the old location and the new locations.
Another option is to use MS Windows to locate all your older PSP type Plugins (They have the file extension .8db) and drag them over to the new Plugins folder.
Good luck,
Michael G
Thanks - I was able to point the 32 bit version to my previous x5 plugins.
I was going to check if aftershot pro can intergrate into PSPx6 as per the questions by another memeber.
Thanks

GPoyner,
From my understanding of file types and bit depth, if the operating system is properly installed for a 32 bit computer that is all that will install and perform on that system. If the computer and operating system is a 64 bit system it may be possible to install older 32 bit programs as Legacy Applications, but not image editing plugins. This is the price we pay for improving computer systems, there comes a time where the only significant improvements that can be made is an upgrade to the Bit Depth of the whole system.
The key here is the Bit Depth of the system, they need to match. If you can find an AfterShot plugin for 64 bit system, and the extension ends with .8bf, you can drag and drop it into the PSP 64 Bit plugins folder and it should work. If its a 32 bit plugin drag it over to the 32 bit version of PSP plugins.

I appear to be the first to have an install problem with paintshop pro x6 ultimate. I am using an up-to-date Windows 7 OS and logged in to an admin account.
The install starts and extracts the files and folders. The EULA screen appears. I check the accept box and the Next button becomes active. When I click the next button the install hangs.
In several attempts the error message was "Error 1719: Windows installer could not be accessed." Ran cmd.exe as admin; then executed >net start MSIserver. Server started OK. Ran install again - still hangs at EULA <Next> click.
I uninstall PSP X5 ultimate. Reinstalled PSP X6 Ultimate same hang at EULA <Next>.
Tried to reinstall PSP X5 and it hangs at EULA screen.
Downloaded ErrorEnd software to repair system. Fixed many system "errors". Ran PSP X6 Ultimate install, still hangs at EULA screen.
Tried to contact Corel, but could not find any help for PSP X6 only PSP X5. Any suggestion of what to do next. I do not want to switch software. I have used every version since it first came out.
Since you are also having trouble installing PSP X5 but were previously able to install it, something has changed on your computer. It sounds like something is interfering with the install process. I suggest you open the Windows Task Manager [Ctrl]+[Shift]+[Esc], click on the processes tab and look at the processes running. Is there something running that should not be? If you don't know what a process does just Google it to find out what it does. There may be a malicious process running. If there are naughty processes running, end the processes and then try installing. I would do this after restarting your system.
The other possibility is an error in the registry. I use ccleaner to run a registry clean. It is not the most through but it is one of the mast conservative and therefore safer than some registry cleaners.
You might also try downloading Malwarebytes free edition and scanning for naughty programs. It is one of the best for machines already infected.
I hope this helps.
I'm not sure if this is similar to your issue, but if you go the Corel Forum you can see what issues/solutions others have, here is a link to one issue on installation - apparently they had a problem with their .NET framework.
