Will the Brits ever understand the Americans?

Health and safety? Good Lord, they have stopped youngsters playing conkers. Problem is that crooks know where to get guns and it is so easy. personally I don't think citizens carrying guns make them safer as the criminals are more likely to shoot.
My point was that, as Brits we have our own culture but not sure it gives any right to criticise the yanks and I know that's not what you were doing but many do.

Viscount Driver,

I hope that you are referring to my response because I do have utmost respect for the UK, it's citizens and our shared culture. When I was on the job as a Fed, I felt that my dealings with '4 Eyes" peers (USA, Great Britain, Australia and Canada) were among the most rewarding that I ever had.

There are things that we are able to and should question of each other as well. With the exception of CAN, One being "Why do you all drive on the wrong side of the road?" :<))

 It is the Brits that drive on the correct side of the road!

This originated before you Americans had guns and we still had to use swords and get up close and personal - and bloody!

Riding on the left hand side of the track left the sword arm on the side closest to whoever was coming the other way.
This is probably where the phrase 'slash and dash' came from.

Nope you can't understand American's. We have all sorts of problems you can't begin to understand. You have some we don't. We are handy in a fight though, aren't we?

The new problem we face is the souless, empty shells of depraved humans we are producing. I am afraid they take a heavy hand to protect us from them- 1 cop per 10,000 can't do the job- so we are left to ourselves--- sort of the same boat we were in 300 years ago.

The thing in this case is, don't swing a knife at defenseless woman- or you may get what you deserve. Apparently in England, you'd prefer to live amongst the sort. I feel that he has been removed from the gene pool and poses no further threat to anyone. But there are a lot of them!

A .22 cal is a very effective killing instrument when that's the only thing you have when you must defend yourself or others around you.

The secret is like real estate: Location Location, Location.
A head shot is better than a stomach, but both can be effective, given time and distance.

Personally I prefer something slightly bigger -- like a mini-gun for instance. Problem is that holsters are a bitch to buy for them.

Until better availability is made for those holsters, I'll stick with my Sig Sauer .45 or .40, thank you.

Sound like you're a bit of a Cultural anthropologist yourself. :)

We were safer a few decades ago than we are now. It is only in recent years that the police have been allowed to carry guns. I suppose someone in authority finally got it through his thick head that truncations against guns is rather too one-sided. (Although they did send a group of Lancers against machine guns a few decades ago).

However, now - due to all the cuts and increased paperwork - I do feel that we are following your lead with increasingly less police. This is certainly making people feel far less secure.

No, I certainly don't think anyone is content with the escalating violence and increasing lack of control.
Unfortunately I cannot see the British government ever relaxing their control and letting people defend themselves.

How this will affect society I do not know. At least with Hitler we could band together and kick ass. Now even our armed forced are being reduced.

We are also seeing so many cases where a criminal has more rights that the victim.

Take all the above and there must come a time when the pressure is too much and even the restrained British will not take the crap any more.

You used to have a rather handy Derringer a few years back and there was a trick holder for it housed up a sleeve.

In the UK things are made far to easy for the criminals Most don't go to prison but get a rap on the knuckles and those that do have three good meals a day and coloured TV.
Now and you won't believe this a prisoner given life for killing several of his relations is suing the government for breach of human rights. This is through the Europeon Union but don't get me started on them or I will use unsuitable language.

Are you a fan of "NCIS-LA" too?

Heddy (Henrietta) Lange (the Ops chief for the team) had one of those.

I think the device was pretty popular in the late 1800s when "Eastern gentlemen" would not be caught dead wearing a holster on their hips. My father also had a swagger stick with an 18-inch blade. Swagger sticks are not very popular nowadays, unless you ride horses, but then they are called something else too.

Does anyone know if the derringer frames are still available today ?

If you read my post you will see that it is a observation on the different views of the people from the two sides of the Atlantic on this type of subject.

Perhaps it is simply the difference between individuals in many cases. Would it be fair to attempt to link the recent slaughter of the British soldier being hacked to death on the street in London as a "view" of the English people? :|

In the UK we are behind you with the series.

We had walking canes with a rather useful blade in. There are still antiques ones around - but in our Nanny State they are illegal.

We are not even allowed to buy kitchen knives until we are 25!

The question has been asked;

My under standing is that they were very impractical, while looking good in the movies, they cut and chaffed the arm , and also restricted the free movement of the arm it was carried on. I've never owned one, this only what I've read on the matter. Perhaps that's why so very few were made.

Problem: if you can fire while it's still connected to the track, it's a "stocked pistol" in ATF's eyes, which makes it fall under the SBR category and a $200 tax-stamp, assuming you're in an NFA-friendly state unlike the People's Republiks of Seattle-grad, Portland-grad, Neue Jermany and Kalifornistan just to name a few...

Get real; My 'view' is that you cannot equate this crime with a housewife taking a rifle out of her boot and killing someone in a petrol station!

This was a one-off. Can you say the same for gun crimes such as the video?

Well we do drive on the "Right" side after all- the natural progression is that the other side is thus the "wrong" side. Along with 3/4 of the world. ;0)

When I was a kid, visiting England, I found it a hoot to ride on the "drivers" side. The only problem my mom had was at intersections of 4 - 2 lane divided roads. Instinctively she wanted to get over to the right side... with the dividers, it made it difficult to just swing back to correct! LOL. Made for some exciting dilemmas. But you know what- everyone there treated us well -
