Hdale, sounds like your best experience is with Sony, put up with the slow speed and get another one.
Every time someone asks here about fast cameras, they are told it has nothing to do with speed, but technique.
Get a Sony and learn to use it. Why are you setting yourself up for a " I told myself", failure. SS

I've heard great things about the Sony NEX-7. I started out with an HP and hated it. Upgraded to a Canon (point and shoot) and love it. Opened a new world for me :) Then was researching DSLR and the Nikon 3100 came out. I had read good things about Nikon and it was right in my budget and that's what I went with. It was hard for me at first because I really enjoyed my canon camera up to this point, and for the first few weeks was doubting myself that I should have gone with Canon. (brand loyalty I think). But I can say now that I love my Nikon and am very happy with my purchase. I think you got a lemon I mean what you are reporting is one of those rare instances, I don't know anyone who's had your experience not only with a camera but anything in general with that type of failure. I think it's how a company conducts it's business is the focal point. I too would be very upset to have a new camera break and customer service treat me that way. I think you either gut it out or get rid of your gear and try another company. I don't think any reviews will help you with this type of issue. Sorry to hear about your experience though.

And this is the problem with small-sampling anecdotal information...it doesn't mean anything.

There are Nikon owners with the same story...Sony users who have the same experience...etc.

Canon users who haven't had any problems, Nikon users who've had great service...etc...

Pick a camera and use it.

Panasonic makes great cameras, their service is above reproach, but the cameras are too slow. My personal experience with Panasonic? I had an issue, admitted to Panasonic that it was my fault, they sent me a brand new camera at no charge anyway.

I don't have personal experience with any other digital brands and the internet reviews don't offer any real help.

Case in point, all the professional review sites praise Canon; they say Canon makes great cameras but fail to mention 'as long as they work', 'their failure rate', or 'their customer service'.

Canon customer service is less than zero and expensive. I spent $1500 for a 40d which failed right after the short warranty period expired.

Canon wanted $285 just to look at it. $285 later; I took 7 photos before the camera failed again with same problem, something to do with the mirror hanging up and shutting down the electronics.

Canon's response? Another $285 and they will look at it again. Not only is it expensive, Canon representatives are downright rude. No, the camera was not abused, no it was not used professionally, and yes it is kept in a well protected camera bag.

Seems the 40d had issues and was almost immediately replaced with the 50d.

Where does one find a good reliable fast camera for under $2k, and what does one do with the canon lenses? Does one take the risk and buy another Cannon or go off into the unknown with a Nikon, Sony, etc.?

I really loved the 40d, when it worked, but all I can say is Canon as a company really sucks!

Nikon service is even worse. I've shot with Canon's all my life, and have never had a problem. Currently using a 60D and a 5DmII 8-)

Or REALLY make a course change and check out the Olympus OMD EM-5. Small but fast, has a great sensor, interchangeable lenses, weather sealed, great IQ (including high ISO), and a very nice electronic viewfindef (as the newer Sonys have). And nothing outside of the Fujl X100s looks as sexy.

Get yourself a Fujl X100s with hood, and thumb grip, you will be happy. About $1200

Fortunately, my one experience with Nikon service has also been excellent - cleaning and adjusting under warranty.

These mainstream camera brands are all mass produced. One gets pulled off the assembly line at what I suppose are random times and are supposedly checked out but aside from some cursory quality control, they go in the box, are distributed and sold. Glitches are bound to happen. You pays your money and takes your chances. A Pro Shooter for one of the big papers in the East told me years ago, never buy new cameras. Wait until the refurbished ones come out and buy then. Why? Because refurbished cameras have been updated to clear out bugs, hangups and circuitry problems that popped up after introduction. They've been checked individually by a tech and firmware has been updated. They also come with a one year factory warranty and they're much cheaper. The only camera I've bought brand new was the Nikon D600 and It appears I got lucky. All the rest over the years...D40, D40X,D90, And D700 were all refurbished by Nikon. Never had a problem with them. I should say I did buy an F-5 and F100 brand new. Still use both and never had a problem. Both are built like a tank. They remain the best cameras I've ever owned.

That's my philosophy, but I also bought the D600 new - didn't want to wait for refurbs to appear.

Canon now gives a one-year warranty on refurbs, but Nikon is still 90 days. I'm betting that they'll follow Canon's lead and go with a year's warranty.

I wouldn't worry about a Nikon 90 day warranty. It's the Cannon's I worry about.

If you buy a refurb from Cameta, they give you a one-year warranty.
