This typeof question has come up before. If you use the Search feature at the top of the page, "dark skin" will get you quite a few threads on the topic.

You always know the right thing to say. Thank you. I shoot inside a gym for basketball games at our local college. Many of the students are varying tones of black. I have to use a fast shutter speed to catch the action so I need to kick up the ISO. But on their skin it often has lots of noise. :(
I haven't found a happy medium.
Thanks for your advice.

As a Black photographer/videographer, I would like to suggest relaxing and using your meter. There is no perfect setting for black skin, as there are so many shades. Your biggest challenge will come with group shots if their skin tones vary widely, in which case you will need to use an "averaged" setting. Other than that, just shoot and adjust on the fly.

I agree. Look at her location - it's none of your business. That says a lot doesn't it.

Just check out your lcd screen after each shot and adjust accordingly. Use the 3 shot method - 1 stop on the money then 1 below and 1 above. I'd take several and use half stop increments. Alsofor even more latitude. Hope this helps.

oh Jerryg, I was pretty sure you agreed not to speak to me or about me any longer because you didn't want me to post the wonderful PMs you sent me... does this mean you really want all the members of UHH to see what a nasty person you really are?

Annie Girl give people a break and be helpful
Ring your doctor and book yourself in for an optorectimy operation - it only takes ½ an hour.
Basically it is an operation that severs the cord connecting your eyes to your ar**ole thus removing your shitty outlook on life

Annie, I think you need an attitude adjustment. Your comments just match the tenor of your location "None of your business". Your life must have little joy.

I usually make a comment about the racists, bigots and Cretans, but not today. Annie_girl has given me something else to comment about - just plain ignorance and lack of compassion for her fellow person. This site has so much to offer as far as photographic knowledge but Annie certainly is not in that group. Shame on you, Ammie.

Well you just got to love the UHH group mob mentality, does it make you feel like part of the "cool" group to offer snide back-handed comments about other members of this forum?

shame on all of you.

Annie, just post them. If he wrote them, he can man up to them.
I'm just glad I'm not in that group you reprinted!
But don't worry, one thing I WON'T do, is send you an underhanded PM.
Be careful Annie, there are some really sick people on here. It's what keeps this great country of ours, from being even greater. SS

Annie Girl perhaps you will understand you have steeped outside the bounds that are allowed by we UHH males if you read:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3143459/

Now your location,,, You have been mistaken in your approach, a lie would have been accepted, we are not use to blunt the truth be polite lie.. remember "A Few Good Men"? "You Can't Handle the Truth"... tell them you live in Trump Towers,, that's good,, impressive.

The best thing to do is ignore Annie girl and all the other negative folks.

Go with all the positive comments.

OUCH!! That includes me, I thought you guys just felt threatened by women who spoke-out and were out-spoken. I often go against the flow, and at times have neg comments. Are you one who like agreement or honesty if honesty requires a neg comment? Had a boss like that and it came to a point that one of us had to go,,, they gave hm a months pay and kept me. He learned that I did not work for him, rather for corporate....

sorry tita1948... I think some of the boys have PMS,,, It's a guy thing you know.

Hi Hoggs & Hoggetts !! On Saturday August 10, 2013 I will be photographing 5 Black Ladies (together and separately). This will be held at a photo studio c/w all types of umbrellas, soft-box, etc... My question: What settings should I be using to capture the beauty and details of these fine ladies. I will be using a Nikon D80. What would be the best lens and setting to use, for portraits, close-ups and full body shots. I have a wide selection of lens. Any advice !!?? thanks

The equipment could vary so much that there is no single set of camera settings. The ISO and shutter speed, however, would always be at 100. The aperture can be very large (high F-stop), but you may have to take a few practice shots to have the results you need. The exposure compensation can be tweaked to adjust images that are either too dark or too light.

Watch out for Annie Girl. She seems to have recently joined the Photographer's Union, and she's swinging that tripod aiming for your kneecaps if you try to do a "pro" job without meeting the "membership standards."
