Listen to the folks steering you toward Mt. Katahdin. It is actually in a large state park, Baxter SP. You can get great shots from Sandy Stream Pond (get a park map) and may well get a moose in your shot standing in the pond (I did).
If you get to the coast, Maine has 63 lighthouses all along the Down East Coast. Way too many to name here but shots of lighthouses with schooners sailing by are there to be had.
I loved Cadillac Mtn but for some reason was never able to get a shot of it that I was completely happy with. But shots from the top were pretty much OK.
Hope that you all have a great time.

I am from Maine. If you want a photo of a covered bridge, there is one that will not be out of your way up to Moosehead. You will have to go through Guilford on your way. Follow the Piscataquis river towards Dover-Foxcroft. The bridge spans the river about six miles down the road. There is also a river walk in Sangerville that is really great for photos. Welcome to Maine the way life should be.

Been there many times. Drive out to Kokadjo and take a right on the Golden road. It is a tough road and dusty, however, there are lots of cool things to see - including a great waterfall area. Gorge will be on your left. It is the back way to Baxter Park and will take a while to get across. As you get closer toward Baxter you will come across a bridge and weigh station (also on left). A wonderful view of Katadin is in front of you with a pond in front. Kineo Mt. is at Greenville. You will see a lot by air. Just remember that logging trucks have the right of way and move over or be run over. Have fun.

My family (husband and two daughters 4 & 10) and I are leaving for our first ever trip to Maine on the 23rd. We will be staying in Greenville Junction. Having never been there i dont know what to expect. I will be up early to catch the beautiful sunrises and in the evening I will capture the sunsets. Does anyone know of any "must photograph" areas near there? We will be doing a Moose tour, Seaplane tour and visiting Elephant Mountain(site of B52 crash.) I would love to check out some water falls and covered bridges if anyone knows of any in that area. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions!

All of Maine is nice. I wish we'd have done a moose tour, we went all over New England and never saw one. I know you are asking about Maine, but I must suggest this to anyone going to that area. You are about 3 hours away from Quebec City. It's a wonderful, old, historic town. Maybe next time. I don't know much about Maine other than the coast. If you find yourself near Bar Harbor, definately go to Acadia National Park. Also, we've had great fun on whale watching cruises out of Portland and Bar Harbor. Portland was a better trip.

Enjoy & be safe!! (that's me being jealous)

Pigpen, I've heard that from several people but we don't have passports. Next time we will do that for sure.

Before I go to a new area to photograph, I go to Google Earth and look at it from above. I can also look at photos that others have posted and use street view along main roads where data is available. I also use it to determine the where the sun or moon will rise or set. I use data from other web sites to get the time and bearing of sunrise for example then use Google Earth to pr4edict what I will see and which way to look.

crazyformickey good morning to you.I grew up in North conway N.H. and just love the northeast. You have gotten some great advice here from some people who live there.I have spent a lot of time In Maine and just love it.some of the nicest people you will ever meet. One word of advice be very careful of moose they can be very aggressive. There are some signs of aggression to look for when photographing them. For females one sign is saliva running out of her mouth. They get this way when they feel threatend. They are either protecting there calf or you are just to close. For the males it will be a lot of head movement or foot stomping if they are on dry land for they spend a lot of time in water. Before I moved to virginia for work I used to teach classes on wild life and wildlife behavior.Have a grteat time and post some pictures when you get back.

Thanks for the great info!

Al I'm thinking, especially with two young children, it may be safer to do one of the tours to see Moose. Perhaps we may see some on the roads as well. My biggest fear is seeing one as its hit with our car😳 We are going to be extremely careful.

I asked my girls yesterday what they were most looking forward to seeing and while my 4 year old gave me the expected answer of a Moose my 10 year olds answer took me by surprise. She is looking forward to the military B-52 crash site at Elephant Mountain. I think this is going to be a great trip!

They speak very strongly of avoiding a collision with a moose. It's not like a deer that dies, and you get your windshield fixed. The moose gets up and walks away, and you are taken in an ambulance or life flight. The reply about google earth reminded me of something. I go to flickr and/or 500px and search for towns and other things that I see on a map that are near my destination. This has actually been a great help in the past. Also, www.brewpubzone.com is a site where you can search for microbreweries by state. This is helpful even if not a big beer drinker because these places "usually" have very good pub food and interesting atmoshperes.
