A reasonably good way to back things up is to email them from one "regular" email account to an account that you keep just for a backup of your images. You could use one of the free services like hotmail or yahoo or gmail. I use my own server.

Right now, my oldest email (on my own server) has about 2PB of space available. So, when I'm on the road, after downloading from my camera's memory sticks to my computer, the entire set gets uploaded (usually overnight) to that account. So, even before I go out the next day, I have the current day's images well-protected.

HTH.

Do you mean "protection" in the way of being safe from theft? or do you mean "protection" in the way of having them backed up as insurance against computer meltdowns? If it's the first, Flickr is good (unlimited downloads for $25 a year) and if anything happens to your pictures on your own computer, you can get them from Flickr. As for keeping them safe from theft, I don't know of a way other than the watermarks and putting small, low resolution versions online.

Photobucket also allows you to password protect your images, so only those you give the password to can see them. i use Photobucket for a hosting site, to hold the images i link to forums and the like. for my personal site, i use Smugmug.

Just don't use Photobucket. I used it and they would tell me that my pics had thousands of views on some blog somewhere. Turns out my pics were stolen off Photobucket.

A friend of mine uses zenfolio.com. They take care of the billing, too. Her pictures cannot be downloaded, only examined. There is a watermark, also.

I use Zenfolio. There various levels of pricing depending on what you want to do. You can find out more information here http://www.zenfolio.com/

I can only think of two options, Smug Mug and Zenpholio. I have a Smug Mug which I opened a month ago after 4 years with Better Photo and I am very happy with it.

Behance http://www.behance.net/ is a good site upon which to post a "portfolio" of your professional work. Check out the site and you will see that many creative people have taken a lot of trouble to post impressive portfolios there, so you will be in good company. One suggestion: Behance's user interface for posting a portfolio is just about the worst I have ever encountered. So if you have access to Photoshop or The GIMP or some capable photo editor, make a series of 8 1/2 x 11 inch (not so many pixels by so many pixels) JPGs onto which you paste, size, and arrange a selection of your work. 'Then add some explanatory text boxes. Lastly, upload your "pages," one at a time, to Behance using their simplest "template." That way your portfolio will look exactly as you want it to and you will save yourself the frustration of trying to wrestle Behance's UI into submission.

Try 500px.com. It's built specifically for pros, and does a great job of displaying photos.

You can store up to 200 photos on Flickr for free, and you can set them to be not downloadable.

However, screen capture programs make even that characteristic rather useless.

The best way to "protect" your images is to not put them on the 'net.

Nature of the beast.

There is another option, You can purchase cheap web hosting space, like G-Daddy and set up a wordpress blog on it, then configure wordpress for private use (only allow password to display photos).

I use Zenfolio at $100.00 a year for premium service. But if you are talking about just saving your photos, I use "My Book" to store my photos, and put them on CD's when each folder reaches 700 mb of data.
