Does anyone know what website I could use for very little money monthly and where the photos are protected?

You can store up to 200 photos on Flickr for free, and you can set them to be not downloadable.

However, screen capture programs make even that characteristic rather useless.

The best way to "protect" your images is to not put them on the 'net.

Nature of the beast.

The wild hare is right: Once in the web, good bye protection.

Only protection you have on the web (regardless of site and size) is to degrade a picture to the point of not being exploitable. A less than transparent watermark across the middle works every time.

I've been using SmugMug for a number of years. I don't really have anything to compare it with, but it's always served me well. Nice people and reliable service. I take a lot of groups on scuba diving trips to the Caribbean and post all of the pictures to my SmugMug account, which gives anyone interested access to the photos and the option to download any they are particularly interested in saving to their own system. There are several other similar services out there. Shop around. I have the mid-priced program for about $40 a year there is a cheaper program and there is pro-level for selling personal photos.

I found that using an external hard drive works best for me. I keep all my files and data on an external.

As most of us have experienced, computers like to crash and need to be restored, at times from the ground up. With an external drive there's no effect if the computer crashes and I've been keeping photos on an external for several years with no loss at all.

Having experienced the loss of everything before that was on my C:\, I now use two externals. My main keeps all my data, my second is for back up only for material that's very important to me.

Good Luck.

That's a very good point-upon re-reading the OP, one can not be sure whether she's looking for a 'display' site or a backup site.

Really, the question is, 'protected from what'? What are you afraid people are going to do with them, even if they do rip off your low-resolution pictures?

And as others have said, the only way to make sure they aren't ripped off is not to put them on the web in the first place.

Cheers,

R.

I don't believe she's looking for protection from download I think, correct me if I'm wrong, she's looking for a place to secure her photos in the event of a computer crash, a very real hazzard.

I agree. The low resolution versions will not do people much good. You could add a watermark, I suppose.

Sadly, people take stuff and use it in ways you might not want, but what else are you going to do? Staying off the web is the ultimate protection.

Let's try it this way: what kind of protection are you looking for? Obviously, you want people to see your pictures.

Not necessarily - as noted, she may just want a private backup facility like Carbonite or something. The OP is not specific enough to give a correct answer.

Ok I've read a bunch of advice, but what I am looking for is to display my photos. The models have a cd so if anything were to go wrong with my computer they will give them to me, no problem.
I want people to see samples of what I'm doing. I want to get more work from this display. I am on WIX now and having a hard time getting the portraits to show correctly. It took me hours so I don't want to go to another but if I have to I will. I'll eventually have more than 200 photos.
Thanks folks!

About the best viewing site I've seen is Flickr by Yahoo.
I use it as do thousands of others.

The other, simple solution, is to put up your own site. I design sites and have found Go Daddy to be about the best server out there for speed, customer service and quick access to any of my sites... consider that.

Sure it'll cost you some money but hey, it takes money to make money so it's a good consideration.

Besides that, I've found that potential customers these days expect you to have your own site - listed on your business card it'll look very nice.

Jim
