What gets to me when people say, "I be... ". and this is not a black thing. I heard a man say, I be going to my house". I pointed out to him that he had left out a word and ask him if he knew what that word was? He did not know.

I have even caught myself saying "I Be...".

I think it was a valid question. Also, every generation has their own language. we call it slang or colloquial. Many, if not most can switch between local lingo and professional communications on demand.

Thank you for the clarification I often wondered about the proper use of I and me.

What bugs me is when people talk in the first person. "Ray is going to post a message on the UHH now. Ray is going to the fridge for a cold one. Ray is going to crap his pants if Ray doesn't get to the john in time."
Also when folks use that hand signal when referring to the phone. Drives me nuts! I'd like to take that faux phone and shove it up their (_O_).
Or how about "Thanks for sharing"? Share this you mindless twit! Oh, the 'axe' word instead of ask. Gives all the hairs on my b_ _ _ _s an erection.

:XD:

I find I get wound up by people using the word "less" when they should be saying "fewer".For many years I couldn't get my head around when it was correct to say "who" or "whom", I looked it up and finally understod it. I now find myself getting annoyed when people get it wrong. Not in everyday speach but when newscasters do it on the BBC. I was far happier not knowing.

The main problem for me personally with the deteriation in both written and spoken English is where it results in lack of clarity or ambiguity. I am a believer in language evolving, it gives color and identity to different cultures. I even quite like text talk and how it continues to push boundaries, although I struggle to keep up. I dont object to poor spelling per se (unless the perpetrator is complaining about poor English)

I do resent the auto correct on my tablet changing text which I never seem to notice until after I have posted.

Just a quick question for any of you language experts having just read the hilarious comments by 'TerryMac' re the versions of his 'Uncle Jack' joke.......I was always taught at school that it was correct to say 'me' when referring to myself in conversation but to use 'I' when referring to myself with others....eg:- ......Anne and I are going to the shop......however I noticed some time ago that the BBC presenters changed the way they presented their comments to....Anne and me rather than Anne and I and if you listen to them they've replaced I with me in every instance..........is this me not listening carefully enough or maybe I ?

I think they mostly make the mistake the other way, saying "I" instead of "me". Years ago as children we had it drummed into us that when we said "Can Johnnie and me go out to play" that it should be "Johnnie and I". Unfortunately nobody told us when it would be right to say "Johnnie and me". I once had a secretary (obviously a very long time ago!) alter a letter I had written which said "Thank you for seeing Geoff and me yesterday." She changed the "me" to "I". I made her change it back!

Television presenters are not recruited for their expertise in English.

Thankyou for taking a moment to reply Wellheim......but you make my very point.......no I wouldn't say ...me went to a bar because thats singular, but as you pointed out I would say my wife and I went to a bar....what the new BBC convention appears to say is correct would be ...my wife and me went to a bar........but as you so eloquently say...who really cares [other than me]

The rule for English language use of "I" and "Me" have not changed. "I" is always used when the subject of a sentence, whether used as a singular or multiple subject, and "Me" is used when in a prepositional phrase.

I have not caught this error of usage on BBC broadcasts, but if this report of usage is true, it is solely the lack of intelligence of the user, reporter or speaker and not some drastic change in the english language.

Television presenters are recruited for their ability to read from an autocue. The people who type the autocue should have a knowledge of the language.

Interesting comment. If I have an employee who does not use correct grammar that person will be looking for a job.

Correct grammar is needed to convey an idea accurately. The same goes for having a broad vocabulary.

I personnally think the young kids have it write texting
with abevations with speed, errors etc... as long as its
understood.
We are not all or not all capable university types flipping burgers at Macdonalds.
Get a life!

If people speak proper English and write perfectly well good for you,
buy some class and keep it to yourself, thank you very much.

Intellectuals. Why disparage smart or well educated people. They are the ones who invent things like cameras, and solve problems like discovering a vaccine for polio.

I find it interesting that few intellectuals disparage those who are not. Lastly, just what is an intellectual?
