Just a quick question for any of you language experts having just read the hilarious comments by 'TerryMac' re the versions of his 'Uncle Jack' joke.......I was always taught at school that it was correct to say 'me' when referring to myself in conversation but to use 'I' when referring to myself with others....eg:- ......Anne and I are going to the shop......however I noticed some time ago that the BBC presenters changed the way they presented their comments to....Anne and me rather than Anne and I and if you listen to them they've replaced I with me in every instance..........is this me not listening carefully enough or maybe I ?
As a general rule. And remember language isn't the same as maths so all rules are general. the correct way would be to use the same word as you would if you just talikng about yourself. So when talking to a taxi driver you would say "Can you take take my wife and me to town" You wouldn't say can you take I to town. And when you say "my wife and I went to a bar last night" you wouldn't say me went to a bar last night. Like I said these are general rules and who really cares as long as you can be understood?
Thankyou for taking a moment to reply Wellheim......but you make my very point.......no I wouldn't say ...me went to a bar because thats singular, but as you pointed out I would say my wife and I went to a bar....what the new BBC convention appears to say is correct would be ...my wife and me went to a bar........but as you so eloquently say...who really cares [other than me]

Come to NY you will be surprised with the way people speak here. Their English is horrid.
I have to figure out what some are saying in their horrible English.
They are not taught proper English in school anymore.
Plus They are not even taught proper penmanship.
If they are asked to sign something they print their name....go figure. So, we have to get use to all this stuff that is very different.
I'd love to visit NY.....sadly the heart is willing but the bank account weak.....

A lot of intellectuals and stuffy shirts snob types here on the forum and most forums, in my opinion.
I personnally think the young kids have it write texting
with abevations with speed, errors etc... as long as its
understood.
We are not all or not all capable university types flipping burgers at Macdonalds.
Get a life!
If people speak proper English and write perfectly well good for you,
buy some class and keep it to yourself, thank you very much.

I am in agreement with what you said regarding" as long
as it is understood.

But, if you really cared, you would say, "other than I".
I think the people who try to impose their views on how the Engilsh language should be used have probably studied Latin and are trying to apply the same rules. Latin died out for a reason.
