Here is the first line of the story.

That means doc that if a cop beats ya ass cause you annoyed him he can then arrest you for committing a felony cause you were teasing him .....

Assaulting anyone is against the law. Maybe we need a law to make it illegal to assault photographers and peanut vendors, too. The list would be endless. :D
..... It's already illegal to assault anyone doc ..... so photographers and peanut vendors are nobody ..... hum ..... don't ya mean illegal to annoy and antagonize .....
Too late, we're already a police state.
jerryc41 > I hope this doesn't pass because "being annoying" is pretty vague. If a cop starts the day by arguing with his wife ! ! !
if its on the internet , it's got to be true !
Being a New Yorker believe me we have some arrogant cops that could use a good ass whupping. They are the ones that were bullies in high school and now some dufus legislator wants to protect them even more
There are some people & photographers who just plain don't understand courtesy & good judgement - I have also met and know people who truthfully despise policemen. These folk could truly fit the need for this law.
For your protection there is still the burden of proof if one pleads Not Guilty.
After reading the news I have come to the conclusion that when it comes to the law, be it a police officer, judge, prosecutor or politician, the law seems to be what they say it is and this can change on a regular basis. What is written down on paper seems to be irrelevant. Just like our wonderful Government side steps the Constitution as they see fit.

Lets be clear. It is Conservative politicians who present this kind of bill.
Regardless, I think it is against the law to physically assault a police officer when he is doing his duty.
So the question is why propose a law that is already on the books.
There are no Conservative politicians in New York State.

I think a hefty fine is what he has in mind, more than free room and board. I hope this doesn't pass because "being annoying" is pretty vague. If a cop starts the day by arguing with his wife, anything could be annoying.
Or it's a woman cop and it's two days before "that" time of the month...

I wonder if being photographed is annoying?
A bill making its way through the New York state legislature would make it a crime to annoy a police officer by subjecting them to physical contact.
The New York State Senate on Wednesday passed the bill that would make it a felony to "harass, annoy, threaten or alarm" an on-duty police officer, WIVB.com reported.
State Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-Rome, told the station that individuals who harass police officers "create situations that can lead to injuries" and "deserve to pay a price for their actions."
Under the bill, which will now move to the state Assembly, anyone found guilty could face up to four years in prison, the station reported.

  8-) New York State? They still have courts in that place? "Harass a police officer?" I guess taking their donuts is harassing? New York, what a neat place
They were elected as 'lawmakers' so they have to keep making laws. Let's see, maybe we can pass a law outlawing people that have been subject to second hand smoke from breathing in public places. Excuse me, I have a golf and dinner date with a lobbiest friend. He gets angry when I'm late.
