I wonder if being photographed is annoying?

A bill making its way through the New York state legislature would make it a crime to annoy a police officer by subjecting them to physical contact.

The New York State Senate on Wednesday passed the bill that would make it a felony to "harass, annoy, threaten or alarm" an on-duty police officer, WIVB.com reported.

State Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-Rome, told the station that individuals who harass police officers "create situations that can lead to injuries" and "deserve to pay a price for their actions."

Under the bill, which will now move to the state Assembly, anyone found guilty could face up to four years in prison, the station reported.

For Christs sake, aren't we paying enough for supporting prisoners for minor offenses that this has to come up. Where the hell does that Biffo Griffo think the money comes from to feed, provide television, gymnasiums, internet, libraries, and buildings come from ?

I think a hefty fine is what he has in mind, more than free room and board. I hope this doesn't pass because "being annoying" is pretty vague. If a cop starts the day by arguing with his wife, anything could be annoying.

Mr. Griffo would spend his time more productively trying to get some new jobs for the people that live in Rome NY.

Ok...I followed the link to the actual wording of the bill. It looks like it's just an amendment to existing law.
The language is as follows: "A PERSON IS GUILTY OF AGGRAVATED HARASSMENT OF A POLICE OFFICER OR PEACE OFFICER WHEN, WITH THE INTENT TO HARASS, ANNOY, THREATEN OR ALARM A PERSON WHOM HE OR SHE KNOWS OR REASONABLY SHOULD KNOW TO BE A POLICE OFFICER OR PEACE OFFICER ENGAGED IN THE COURSE OF PERFORMING HIS OR HER OFFICIAL DUTIES, HE OR SHE STRIKES, SHOVES, KICKS OR OTHERWISE SUBJECTS SUCH PERSON TO PHYSICAL CONTACT.
Since physical contact is required to be guilty of this law, I'm not worried about any vague definition of "annoying". On the other hand, why the hell do we need this law? Wouldn't the physical contact described constitute an assault which is already illegal?

Thanks for the MAJOR clarification. Physical contact required. Much different scenario than that painted by some of the other posters who assumed just "annoyance".

Hey, Fox News is way more accurate than the general media who totally ignore Washington corruption.

Lets be clear. It is Conservative politicians who present this kind of bill.

Regardless, I think it is against the law to physically assault a police officer when he is doing his duty.

So the question is why propose a law that is already on the books.

Here is the first line of the story.

"A bill making its way through the New York state legislature would make it a crime to annoy a police officer by subjecting them to physical contact."

Far be it from me to criticize Fox News. I was just referring to the headline of the Fox article, as seen at the start of this thread.

"New York bill would make it a felony to annoy a police officer."

Assaulting anyone is against the law. Maybe we need a law to make it illegal to assault photographers and peanut vendors, too. The list would be endless. :D
