Excellent observation...I am becoming convinced that because of the length and rate of change inherent in film photography, many understood the equations, the types of films and processing, the lighting options, etc. BUT...in the digital age I'm not sure anyone truly has a grip on much of anything. The tower of babble is overwhelming. The digital age, filled with secrets, proprietary solutions, countless formats and processing solutions all changing at warp speed...throw in the "education" factor...trust me there is a vast amount of confused and often simply incorrect information floating about YouTube...shooting RAW, shooting JPEG...full frame..mirrorless...MAC or PC...on and on and on...so many pros have defined what gets the job done for them and just ignore the noise and I truly feel sorry for the people wanting to learn from ground zero...and by tomorrow afternoon much of it will be changed again...The only consistent factor is the money being made by the hucksters.

It does sound like the old members on this forum are getting tired of the same old questions. The problem is that the new members haven't seen them before...and you can't blame them for that. So...I have a recommendation. A totally separate photo forum for longtime members, which can be called the Senior Photo Forum. Then the newer members can enjoy the experience of UHH just as we did when we first joined without any rejoinders from those bored by the samo samo questions. Apologies to Jerry!!

Steve,

I really don’t think that would work. First, where do seniors start? Second, many of the questions come from the senior members of this forum. This forum is not that old so does not really have what I would consider senior members. It does have experienced photographers but they may not be experienced in digital.

I agree that some have become discussed with seeing the same old questions time and time again. We all need to get in the habit of reading the subjects and don’t bother with the ones we are not interested in. Most days I don’t mind answering questions but some days I just don’t feel like it. On those days I just don’t read the questions like “what lens is better…..”, I just ignore that question. To be honest it was not that long ago I asked similar questions because of the digital factor.

I have learned a lot from this forum and don’t mind passing on what I have learned. I for one like being challenged, being made to think. Rarely does more than a couple of days go by that someone does not make a post that makes me think a little. Those posts help keep my feeble mind active.

I do think Jerry has made a good point but now the question is what is the best way to handle the problem. Maybe a list of suggested information that should be included when asking a basic question should, or could, be written up. Could such a list be made up so it must be read when someone joins the forum? It should also be put in a place so that “newbies” could reference it when they want or feel the need to. This should be a list of suggestions, not a list that has got to be followed. This would just be a general guide because not all things suggested would be helpful for every question. If the OP were to follow the guide it might eliminate their getting pounded with 30 questions, 25 of them being the same ones.

Jerry, you started this thread, where did you go? Your thoughts please. If you do not get back in here this thread is going to die.

I'm going to make a radical suggestion. When someone posts a question about what camera or lens to buy, we should not answer his question with more questions. Obviously, we need some information, but the person probably gave us enough to get started.

If someone is about to buy his first DSLR or wants to get a new lens, I doubt that he is buying it just to take pictures of fire ants on a cloudy afternoon from 200 feet away. Nor is he buying it exclusively to take pictures of albino eskimos and polar bears during blizzards.

When I started in photography, I did so because I wanted to take pictures - every kind possible. Let's assume that the people asking questions just want to take pictures of all kinds and try to give them the best advice we can. Hitting the poster with a dozen questions can be intimidating and make him feel stupid. One or two questions about budget or experience are fine, but the poster probably does not have answers for most of the question that are often asked. We don't want to make him feel like he doesn't know how to ask a question..

Just a suggestion.

Yes,I agree but we members who are new to photography have to remember to give you experts a little more information when we are asking you what type of camera or lens should we purchase, such as what type of photos are we going to be taking!

jerryc41,
I think you hit the nail on the head! Many new photographers are afraid to ask a question on this forum because there is so much technical discussion that they are overwhelmed and may think that they have dumb questions. Especially as you stated when they are hit with more complicated questions than the one they are asking.
Good post!
