I have the original Kendle Fire and my wife has the Nexus 7. We both are very satisfied. I enjoy reading in bed and when the light is too bright I reverse the black and white and it is much easier on my eyes and doesn't bother my wife's sleeping.

I am considering buying a nook or a kindle. I don't know much about them. I do know i want one that looks as close to real print as possible for reading books and i need it to be able to access wi-fi for checking email. Can anyone help me with which brand and model would be best and most economical and without having any data plan or xtra monthly fees. Thanks for any information

I have had ereaders since the first one came out in 1988, a Thompson and have used them ever since. Currently use a 8.4 inch Fire, a Xoom and a Paperwhite.

If you want to just read books without pictures, any of the eink readers are great. I have a Paperwhite from Kindle that does a good job but has a back-light, unlike most eink readers. It was just over a 100 too, cheap for an ereader. It also fits in my shirt pocket and weighs next to nothing. To add email you move up to bigger ones. Battery last for a week to 10 days, depending on back-light.

The large Kindle fire works very well for reading books with pictures, like texts or photo books. Not perfect mind you but pretty well. I also get magazines and other reading material on it. Email is easy along with internet, though not as nice as a laptop. There are wifi models and a 4G model. The 4G model only works where ATT has LTE service. My battery last a few days, usually have to charge it every two to three days so I don't get caught out. Heavier though. Had a 7 inch Fire HD, hard to read magazines on it.

Xoom is an older 4g pad, battery last 2 days average, can get email and internet fairly well. This thing is huge, much bigger than the Fire. Reading PDFs is easiest on this, internet and email is better and I use it as a 10 inch display for my camera. An Ipad would probably work just as well but they cost more, my Xoom is about 2 years old now, was 4G but was about 100 cheaper than the wifi Ipad. Ipad is sleeker and more popular. Used both as a reader and the Fire does a better job than either one, but the pads do more easier than the Fire. They are heavier than the Fire too. Gave my brother the Ipad, kept the Xoom.

This is my opinion. What I would do is cat into a Best Buy type store and play with the floor models a little, see what fits your hands and your lifestyle the best.

I have an older Kindle. Great for reading the printed page from start to finish
like a novel. awkward for text book or study when you have to search back and forth. If you want color, internet and those bell and whistles get a kindle fire. If you go kindle reader consider the newer "paperwhite" Easy to operate and GREAT
support.

I have a Nook, which when I bought it a few years ago I wanted since the Kindle was only available in B&W. I wanted to be able to subscribe to magazines on the Nook. At that time the relative advantages were: Nook had color and had internal lighting, Kindle was only in B&W and couldn't be read in the dark - BUT - had a very long battery life (100+ hours) compared to the Nook at about 10 hours. Well - I discovered I hate reading magazines on a screen. But the advantage for me was also that at that time our state library had thousands of digital titles that you could download free for 2 weeks each, and most were just in the Adobe pdf format which could not be read by the Kindle. Nowadays books are widely available in both formats.

However - might I suggest another option - a tablet computer. I purchased a Samsung Galaxy S 10" tablet for my wife for Christmas (about $329). She is not real computer savvy, but she loves this and has taken to it like a duck to water. She uses it for web surfing, e-mail, and downloading and reading all sorts of books. I suspect a tablet these days makes a better choice for all-around functionality. And I like a 10" screen a little better than the 7" screen. Have fun!

I have an iPad which is probably the most used electronic piece of equipment I have every used - including my camera. I have both nook and kindle apps downloaded, works with internet and email, listening to music, great for playing games or watching movies if you have Netflix or hulu. My friend just got an android tablet and hers will do all of these things also. I am a purist with books and an avid reader. I never thought that I would rather have a tablet than a book in my hand. However, the lighting is better, I can read places I never could before and you can change font size if you need too. Lots of free older books on Kindle too. The iPad is the best purchase I have ever made but the adobe issue has been a pain at times. I am ready to upgrade and am debating between new iPad and android bases myself. Either purchase, I believe you would be thrilled.

I agree with the ipad. I have the mini ipad and have the Kindle app. It's great with a font choice and the light of the screen can be adjusted. I can read in bed with all the lights off or while riding in the car at night. Page turning is just a touch of the screen in a sweeping motion. Just like a books page with a wet finger...It's lightweight and has all the functions of a computer. The camera function is also amazing.

I have a Kindle 4th gen, and a Fire. During a five day rehab, I read about 3 or 4 hours a day on my 4th gen. I only had to charge it once. The Fire might make it through 1 book. And it gets very warm. But the lighted page is nice.

I just checked and found that FoxitReader Mobile will let you read .pdf files on your iPad.

I use Foxit Reader instead of Adobe reader on my PC and find it to be very useful and doesn't run into problems.

Thanks for the tip, having used Adobe extensively when I worked in the printing business I have missed some of the capabilities of Acrobat, but did not want to pay the price that Adobe asks for that document software. I just went to the website to learn about Foxit reader and it looks to be more like Acrobat than it does Acrobat Reader which has almost no creation or editing capabilities.

There is a free program called "Calibre" that lets you convert any e-book to a format usable in any e-reader.

My local library has just put a glitch in the system, and converted to a 3M cloud system for their files. The file system is not compatible with the original Kindle. They say they are working on a program to take care of this problem, but who knows.

I do not want to have any monthly fees but i do need to be able to ready emails. I was told that with the Ipads i won't be able to open all emails because they don't accpet adope reader. Any info on that would be appreciated.

Th ipad does read PDF files and you can get the kindle app on it too. Emails on th ipad, other than for work, is where I do all my emailing. Fast and simple.

Did a little research on them in anticipation of buying one or the other. Have decided to buy neither. There's an ugly rumor that B&N will stop selling the Nook soon. The Kindle limits you to buying only from Amazon. There have been problems with both as to how well they function and how long they last. I'll buy a tablet instead and buy from whoever I damn well please, thank you very much Amazon.

And for the record, I love Amazon, buy a lot from them but I won't be dictated to by another a-hole corporation no matter how much biz I give them otherwise. :o)

Been out of town for awhile and just read your post. Hands down iPad is the one . Very versatile ,does many more things then the other pad and battery life is very long.
