Go to a local hardware store, have a piece of single strength glass cut to the size you want. I would start with a 24"X24". Buy a small can of Black high gloss enamel paint and a 1" brush. Paint 1 side of the glass, let it dry for 24 hours. Then shine a light through the unprinted side to touch up and areas you miss. Do not be afraid to put a heavy 1st coat on. After the touch up has dried, get a piece of cardboard box that will fit the glass. Cut out the cardboard and use black gaffers tape or a black PVC tape to secure the cardboard to the glass. Turn it over and clean. Instant black reflective surface that will withstand a little more weight than a mirror or glass alone

A couple of years ago I picked up a shinny black tile at a Michael's store for some small product photography. It worked great and only cost a couple of bucks.

No need to paint the glass, just put it on top of a black tablecloth or something like it.

Would one of those mirror tiles from a hardware store do the job - you know it's about 12 inches square and has sticky tape on one side so you can mount it on the wall (or where ever) if need be?

Mirror tiles create a lot of reflections. I don't think this is what the OP wants.

I'm more interested in a polished surface to highlight the object, rather than just to catch a reflection. Any ideas?

Also, unless mirror tiles come in a 24" x 24" size, 12" x 12" will be too small. And, if you put two tiles together, you will have to deal with a very unsightly seam where the two tiles are joined.

I have had great results with the two suggestions below.

2much,
I have played around with this also, and have found that black backed glass to be the best surface. You can usually find it at your local glass repair shop. I have also used black glass frames made by "Better Homes & Garden", found them at a local box store. Good luck in your project, post some results when you get them.

Hi,
I have a very small studio with appropriate studio flash systems and I wish to do still life photography of small objects sitting on a highly reflective, mirror like, black surface. I've seen this technique in photographs occasionally found in books, mags, etc., but I never have figured out what material they are using for the objects to sit on. The black surface does not show any grain. Could this be some black plastic polymer? What other surfaces qualify (I can't afford to use a black piano top, nor does it reflect sufficiently). I'm more interested in a polished surface to highlight the object, rather than just to catch a reflection. Any ideas?

Thanks
