Agreed. My first camera was a Canon P&S Power Shot A590IS 8. MegaPixels and it is never very far from me, even if I have my 7D or 5D MkII. It's a great little camera.

Well - you don't say where you will be going and what you will be doing. Going to Alaska or on safari - just take the big camera everywhere you go and have it with you every waking minute.... However - I really like my Sony Cybershot (from when they still had viewfinders and you didn't have to use the battery-life-eating screen) and when I am going out in the evening, going to be in really crowded places, going to be in places where a big camera could be intimidating (third-world villages, perhaps) I like to have my Cybershot in my pocket. I have a little 6-inch flexible tripod, and using the self-timer I have taken some very amazing time-exposure photos at night. Have a great vacation!
