I currently have a D5100 and getting ready to go on vacation. Should I also get a point shoot camera just have incase we don't have the big camera with us. If a point shoot what kind? Been looking at WB250F by Samsung

I don't think you will be thrilled with the Samsungs image quality. Look at Canon or Nikon equivalents. You should be able to get a good price on a recently discontinued model (still under full warranty). Having a P&S is always a good idea; I carry an old 8 megapixel everywhere I go.

UPDATE: Just saw post by Racmanaz: S-100 is a good choice and prices on them are dropping.

I would strongly recommend a Panosonic Lumix SX7 or similar. AWESOME lens, 10x optical zoom and very reasonable price.

Just take your D5100 and make sure you have it with you all the time.

Hi there - are you really asking the forum to advise you on whether or not you should take an additional camera with you? I honestly believe that decision should be yours alone !

If you decide you'd like to take something small, light, compact and giving good quality results look at the Nikon range as you'll be familiar with their menu systems. Alternatives giving full control of the camera might be the Sony RX100 or Panasonic LX7 or the LX5, all excellent small cameras. For a "point and shoot" with good results in "auto" mode look at the cheaper Panasonic Lumix ZS30, the ZS25 or the ZS20. Stick it on "Intelligent Auto" and in most cases you'll be happy with the results.

Hi higrudin, I agree with "craggycrossers, the Lumix models he recommended are a good choice, I have had 3 Lumix cameras and now have a TZ20.
I originally chose the camera for its GPS function without realising how good the images would be, I use the "Intellent Auto" setting as well as "Landscape", there is an HDR setting which is pretty useless so don't use that.
Also don't be tempted by the Samsung WB250, I have one and it does not compare with the Lumix.

I have a Samsung wb700 18 zoom, brilliant just to pop into your top pocket and great pictures. Now they have even bigger zooms and if you like, some have Wi Fi and GPS capabilities so you can E-Mail your pics straight away.

My Canon ELPH 510 goes everywhere along with my Pentax K 20 D. I would not not think of traveling without this second back up camera.Of course set to it's best settings. Also a homemade adapter for a polarizing filter. My Pentax was in for repairs at the time of the last Audubon Christmas Bird Count,so took the P&S,missed a lot of good stuff, but got a very good pic of a Wnooping Crane on the ground that has gone around as a photo from the count. It also allows some unnoticed candid shots that might be objected to with a big camera.Remember it slips into a pocket for trek somewhere.

All I have is a P&S, Lumix TS10, looking for a DSLR.
One consideration is sticking with the same brand, I know the menu system and language. I saw a D40 at the pawn shop and was trying to figure it out. Had to come home and look up the instruction on line just to get the camera to work.
Point being, when you have to remember the function of two different systems, or brands, it can be frustrating when you 'have to get the shot'. You are already familiar with the D5100, why start over?
I might be wrong, being just an amateur, but that's my 2 cents.

Of the cameras mentioned non have an optical viewfinder and thus you have to use the screen.

I would urge you to look at the new Canon G15. Look at the DP review. You cannot go wrong with this camera.

Maybe a bridge camera. Haven't checked E-Bay or Craig's List but I'll bet some who have graduated to a DSLR are selling their's.
