I took this yesterday, it was a very windy day, tried with tripod but it was blowing about. My hair kept getting blown over the lens (nowi know why so many male photographers shave their hair) it was a struggle but i shall be back there soon to try again - what can i do next time to make it better? I am happy for anyone to download and make and changes to illustrate any points made.
F10
1/60sec
50ml lens
CPL filter ( i dont know if it was the upside down, sideways or the right way up, just cannot seem to see much difference when i turn it)
thank you

Aside from being a tad blue, I may have made it less centered, but a wonderful study...good job...

Beautiful photo with light and color. The only critique I have is to not center rock and instead set off center to right or left.

Yes. I agree, the rule of thirds would work. Maybe bring in more foreground, as the sky is not very interesting. Just MHO.

:-D :-D

Hi alycrum: Unlike others here I like the bluish cast to the photo, for me it sets a somber mood, which fits the wear and tear on the rock by the unforgiving sea. Like the others have mentioned, the rock it to centered in the photo. I would also like to see the subject taken from different angles. I'd also like to see it during a time when the surf is breaking hard against it, with lots of spray in the air. Just some ideas for later shoots at that location, if you ever get back there. Like you CPL filters are a mystery to me. I know they have their uses but I've just not found a shot where I've wanted to use the one I have.

your head remains on the block unscathed as i am unable to open the files, which format are they saved in?

Thank you, in my head i saw it as somber and dramatic and yes i would have liked the crashing waves too but although it was very windy the wind was the wrong direction to make the wave crash. i did try long esposure but having no ND filter made that impossible. Thank you for your comments, much appreciated

I completely and the reason it is centered is becaue there are other not so interesting rocks both to the left and right and i didnt want them in the pic. however next time i am there i shall go down closer as i see there are a few small rocks that almost look like a path which might give a bit of foreground interest. agree

thank you! it is centered because there are very uninteresting rocks to the left and right but yes i agree that havingit off centre would look much better

Hello again alycrom: I'm glad you like my analysis for the mood of the picture. The crashing wave think or lack there of is understandable. The ocean and weather seldom cooperates with mankind. The suggestion was to try for that type of shot when you know that kind of wave action would be going on provided you live close enough to the location. The use of the 50mm lens would also contribute to the necessity for you needing to center the rock if you didn't want to include some of it's neighbors. So that too is understandable. Where you caught me off guard is needing a Neutral Density or ND filter for long exposure. Maybe some one can clarify that for me. Like I said before most filters are a mystery to me. I mean I know there are times and places for each ones use like say using a polarizing filter to cut down glare or the reflection off the water, but others??? Maybe I'm just missing something here.

i am not experienced in the world of filters either, but i am trying to learn and i think i might be correct when i say a ND filter is needed when doing long exposures in daylight as it lets in too much light and causes the photo to be completely overexposed or in my case just a white screen. The ND filter works much in the same way as when we wear sunglasses. it lessens the amount of light entering the camera and allows for the subject to be exposed properly. What i wanted to do was to make the sea all fuzzy and milky and cloudy effect you get with a long exposure but the slowest shutter speed my camera would do this and still give me some sort of photo was 1/250 which was too short for the water effect. so the ND filter depending on the strength of it gives the illusion of a smaller aperture as it lets in less light. The different strengths of filter pertain to closing the aperture by various F-stops but i am afraid i dont know the numbers. you can also stack the filters for a darker effect or longer exposure. i have absolutely no idea if what i have said makes any sense because what goes on in my head is often not what others see! My mind is a permanent blonde moment with flashes of clarity occasionally,

It might be worth starting a thread about the ND filter as i am sure there are lots of good advice to be had from people who might not see this, and they will be able to correct any mistakes i have made.
