I was in our local forest earlier this morning and took a few snaps to keep my hand in. This one suprised me. None of the other images taken today have this "sunbeam" effect, even those taken within minutes of this and in the same orientation, direction and lighting.
My previous encounters with flare manifest themselves as circular orange or red highlights. I have not seen this effect before and wonder if anyone can throw some light on what is happening?
18-55mm Nikkor lens at 30mm, f/16, 1/60th secs. ISO 100. No lens hood but did have an optically clear lens filter in place. Image is straight out of camera.
Looks like some Alien Spaceship Beam of sorts....lucky you weren't right in it there or you wouldn't be here to talk about it !
Was it misty at all, searcher? I've seen a sort of curtain rainbow effect at ground level caused by mist and high humidity in the corner of a field.

1st really pleasant day I have seen this year, low humidity (63%, no mist, no rain, temp approx 50 deg F.
I know it looks a bit like the end of the rainbow but it has been like a summers day.

In that case I'll have to go with the "Alien spaceship beam" theory. Expect imminent abductions.
Almost looks like you zoomed while the shutter was open or the autofocus was still searching for its focus (but most DSLR's won't let you shoot till it is finished focusing)-if this were a print not a digital file I would be looking for some new ink or a new printer. Lens protecting filter clean?.. Trees look like they could have moved = fuzzy look but why the sky effect ?? Best guesses .
Where is 'Scotty" when you need him ???
I like the statement:
..... low humidity (63%, no mist......
Here in Southern Arizona that would be 6.3% humidity ! lol
Actually it looks as if you took the shot through a window and something was reflecting on the inside of the glass. I have never seen exactly that effect before, but the "beams" appear to end below the top of the frame in a diagonal manner, and fade out into the grass.
Looking closely at the picture, if you notice near the top, just off the center, the ends of the "bands" form a semi circle.
Just a wild shot, but have you cleaned the lens lately? Both ends?

The only window was the filter. I have been scouring my files looking for something similar but nothing comes up. I have also checked the filter for oil or grease but cannot find any. Problem there is that any residue I probably would not be able to see.
Next sunny day we get, it will be around 50-60% humidity, I will try the same shot again before I clean the filter.
I had hoped that someone would have had an "Ahh" moment and recognised my error. Never mind, thank you all for looking and if I do get beamed up I'll switch to a long lens.

No I haven't, perhaps that's what is needed. That reminds of the old days, putting a smear of Vasolene on the lens to soften the image, applied badly and there could be some strange results,
Problem solved, thanks Traveler, there was a very faint fingerprint on the mount end of the lens.
Careless handling costs prints!
Next time, tell those #*!##*!! aliens to keep their fingers off your lens.

Maybe you could patent a filter with "finger print halo affect".
Maybe you could call it a God filter
not sure myself but I would say lens flare
