Museum quality there! Where in the world did you find these subjects? Grew up in SA but moved away years ago. Really nice work.
All my shots are taken in the downtown area of Morgantown/Fairmont/Clarksburg West Virginia.
Shots are taken between 3:00 and 6:00P.M.
None of the shots are true candids, although they may seem non posed. The subjects are moved no more than 50ft from where I find them. I move them to better natural light. I pay everyone $5 that I shoot.. Everyone signs a release. Everyone wins. I get a cheap model.. They get $5 for whatever..
Soup kitchens in your local area are a great place to go find interesting people.
The trick to the photography is light and expression(mood).
Getting them(light and mood) to come together in 5 minutes is the challenge.
I have shot about 50 people on the street. Of the ones that I selected to shoot %95 have turned out really well. About %5 I don't like and never publish.
That's a little more of the "scoop" if anyone is interested.
(Hope this gives you a good target area Wendy. Be sure and post some of your results if you decide to pursue.)

Thanks so much for that info Russ!!
One of my Ordinary Black and white images that never got published. I did not pay this guy and he was "Back on his feet" working at Arby's. He was from New Jersey living in Morgantown to get it together.
I'm still looking for Jersey to give him a couple of the pictures.
Just an ordinary guy.
Jersey,
love your work russ, and thanks for the insight into your method.
just been checking out your sight. your b&w street work really is something else!
excellent.

I cannot say enough good about that first shot...it's spectacular.
And the hands too...just gorgeous.

Yep,
First two were the best of the bunch.
Last two will probably be the first to go off my website.
I keep trying to bring up the quality.
The last one of Jim was just all I could get. It was difficult to photograph him... He really didn't want his photo taken.
THe picture of Frank I may rework. I did it in a metallic B&W process.. Sometimes it works better than others. Just thought I would let it go for now.
Thanks for commenting rpavich.
The first shot went to popular in less than 30 minutes on 500px.com.

I love your portraits! They show such depth. I just started taking portraits...didn't realize how tricky it can be. I spent years taking pictures of hands,however....

Do you offer to pay the models or just ask for their permission?
