24mm 2.8....outstanding lens even on a DX body.

D80 Nikon. Take a lot of landscape pic. Need a wide angle lens of my dreams. You guys are the best for recommending stuff. Any suggestions?
14x24 F/2.8 is the best wide angle Nikon lens, period.....my only issue with this glass is the inability to attach ND/Polarizing Filters
If you REALLY want to have some fun....and get a 180 degree view, check out the 10.5mm F/2.8 for DX and 16mm for FX Fisheye lens.

Get the Tokina 11-16 f2.8. It won't autofocus with your D80 but with such wide DOF and because you will be taking your time shooting landscapes anyway, getting good focus should not be too much of a problem. Back to you...your decision. Rob.
I have used the Nikon 14-24 2.8 lens for landscapes for several years and it's wonderful. However, as nikonshooter pointed out, can't use ND/Polarizing filters with it. There are expensive ways to get around this issue, a special built filter holder, but this lens is wonderful for landscapes.

Just logged in to say what you already said.
So, I'll jst say what you suggest is what I have and use.
If you really want fun interchange the 10.5 to an FX and the 16mm to a DX and then try to figure out the difference

Why do you believe a wide angle lems is necessary for successful landscape photos?
There was a recent exhaustive discurrion of that subject here on UHH.
Browse through any of Ken Peterson's books or tutorials at Adorama. My impression is that he's down around the 15mm range for the majority of his close up and landscape work.
Consider: on an FX your DOF with a 20mm is 2 feet to infinity.
(On an FX, just square your focal length in mm and drop the right two digits to get your hyperfocal distance in feet. )

Patw28.....the hyperfocal distance in dependent on the Fstop chosen. Example, 20mm at F2.8 has a hyperfocal distance of 23 feet and at F16 has a 4 foot hyperfocal distance, rounded off.
Tokina 11-16, sometimes you can find one on Craigslist.
I am very happy with my Tokina 11-16. It's f 2.8 and very sharp.
Look at the Tokina wide angles. They have an 11 to 16 f2.8 which I have. Great lens. they also have a 12 to 24 f4.0 [one stop from the 2.8] that was highly rated when it was introduced.
I recently purchased the Sigma 8-16mm lens for my Canon T3i. Haven't had a lot of time to play with it yet-bought it then got the flu for the past two weeks-but what I have done with it has been super fun. Very steep learning curve at the 8mm though so be prepared if you go ultra wide. The pictures are "very" sharp and clear, but does better in higher light situations. The landscape pictures are marvelous.
Like always I can count on some great advice. I will take all into account and go from there. Thanks again

It seems you are seeing an array of lenses so let me add my 2 cents worth. I recently picked up a Nikon 12-24 2.8 and love it for my D7000. NO distortion and very crisp lens.
I've been unable to locate information on "a Nikon 12-24 2.8". There is a Nikon 14-24 f/2.8 and a Nikon 12-24 f/4.
Was this a typo, or is there actually a 12-24 f/2.8?
