Magazine cover compensation

Having my photo on the cover of a magazine that has a subscription of 500,000 was great fun, and I was compensated. However, in the future if I should be selected again for a magazine cover, what would be the expected compensation? Do I consider subscriptions, countries, or just accept what is offered.

Most magazines have set rates that they pay for covers, or any interior photos also. You can always decline payment and withhold your image release if you think it is not enough. If your image is truly unique then you can always request more for it, but that magazines payment is for one time use and not for permanent ownership of that image.

You can contact most leisure magazines ('phone or e-mail) and request their rate card. The standard rates that they pay per use will be listed.

I just took 3rd place in Mn. Magazine contest where the 1st place prize was having your photo on the cover---no payment involved. I still get to have my photo published inside the magazine which will give me some exposure in lieu of a financial payment. I was pretty happy at this point of just being published.......

Why not give it a try?? Just remember if you're going to do this above board there's IRS, release forms for payment etc. I have been to the point of going to the editor himself because of holding back payment due. But what the hey---what do you have to lose??

Seems to me that the magazine are getting as much material as they can ever use as a freebie. What do the "competition" Ts & Cs say about future use and copyright?

Unfortunetly, the money is not in editorial. At least editorial gives many photographers a way to be able to have something published that may give them some exposure and may open other doors. Sure, big time magazines are having big time photographers doing the covers for big money.
That said the money is in the commercial advertising found within those same pages. But their again, it's possible to have your foto used in some way through a stock agency and still you got very little for it.
That's why there are so many doing weddings and portraits. Only one way to get your wedding and portraits done, and that's to hire a local photographer(usually).

Most magazine have standardized rates for covers, 1/4 page, 1/2 page, etc. And it's usually not what people think it is...meaning that it's usually less money than they might think.
Now, if you're John Shaw and they want your photo for the cover of Outdoor Photography or something similar, that's a different ballgame. But Joe Blow photographer won't get the same rate as John Shaw or other "well known" photographers. Joe will get the "standard" rate.

There are so many variables involved, it's hard to say for sure. Example: Getty images, cover of a magazine, restricted rights, 3 months, 500K circulation, print only.
About $1000.
Of course, Getty is getting some of that money too, for hosting and marketing, etc.
Just a wild guess? I'd probably let them use one of mine for one publication, print only, for $500 give or take, depending on the publication. If it's for an organization that I was a part of like animal rescue, domestic violence, etc. MUCH less. For profit magazine? I would not think the $500 price would be reasonable. If I was interested in getting my name out there, got credit, etc., I might do it for half that. There are literally MILLIONS of images out there at Stock photo houses, and some of them are really cheap.
I'd ask them for their standard rate sheet or equivalent, and then see how it compares to other similar publications with about the same circulation.
