Pretty cool...I cant help but wonder. Did you have the idea and then shoot to make it or did you have the shots and say Eurika these would look great together? Doing this would never occur to me, not to mention that I would have no idea how.
I would love to know your thought process on this...

First of all, thanks everyone for the kind comments and suggestions. Okay now on to my thought process. When I am out shooting I just shoot what I personally find interesting. I do sometimes consider what I want to do with the photo later but not very often. I often take interesting cloud formations knowing that I might need to replace a sky later on. I will take shots of textures, stone walls, brick walls, etc, to use later on and keep these in a folder library of textures. It's funny sometimes to look at the expressions on strangers faces when I am down on my stomach taking a picture of an old rusty iron grate etc. LOL. I'm sure they are thinking what the hell is this guy taking a picture of. After I get back and start looking at my shots I'm asking myself the same question. LOL. At this point I sort through the shots and and weed out the bad stuff. When I am playing around in photoshop I will look at a photo and say, hmm I like the photo, BUT, I don't like the sky or I don't like this or that. That's where I start thinking what can I do to transfrom this photo to something I like. This is the point that becomes fun to me. I start trying this or that, etc. hopefully improving my Photoshop skills along the way. I was playing around the other day and that's how the photo here came to be. I liked the beach shot but not that much, the sky was boring as hell and the water just didn't do much for me. SO, I looked through some of my other shots and found a sky and water shot I liked and the journey began! The bird was something I thought of trying pretty far along in the process. Just FYI, it took me a long time to do this composite and in my opinion it has too many flaws to point out here. I'm sure the experts could have done this in minutes, and that's my goal, to one day be able to knock this out in a few clicks. Until then, I'm am enjoying the learning experience. Once again, thanks everyone for all the positive feedback.

Wow, very nice work. And that doen't look like an easy task, all the fine masking work that was required. Very pleasing finished image.

Fstop...thank you so much for your answer. I really appreciate it and your explanation of an obviously difficult and time consuming project is easy to understand. Im feeling inspired to maybe finally open up the book on Photoshop!

The first photo are the shots that took in Perdido Key Florida and the second photo is my composited photo of the three. This is my first real attempt at doing more than 1 photo in a composite. Software: Photoshop Cs5,Nik Color Efex Pro.

Comments, Critiques, suggestions on how to improve, likes, dislikes are all welcomed on my post. I would ask that you don't post any of your photos or edits of my photo here.

Thanks

sorry . . . I like the originals of the two on the left as they are. I like the color tones of the sky & clouds -- very dramatic. In the composite they lose their punch.

The flying/landing bird looks ps'd in to me and makes the composition too busy -- enough going on with the fence line, chairs, umbrellas.

Kudos for undertaking the exercise. I would love to see you composite just the two photos & try to maintain the power of the gray-tones. (although now I see you didn't like the clouds/water one all that well to begin with . . . there's something compelling about it for me!)
