I bought a 27 inch iMAC back in late 2009. I ended up upgrading the RAM to 16 GB myself using modules from OWC
This was my first Mac, took sometime learning the basics but I haven't regretted it.

OK- need to straighten some things out here.
If you get the 21" iMac, you have to order it with the RAM as it cannot be added by the user later. The 27" iMac DOES have access to the RAM slots.
I know this was not true on earlier models, but it it the case now due to the slim profile.
Get it with 16GB.
Hi Captain C, are you talking about the laptop? I bought my 21.5" iMac desktop a year and a half ago and am able to add memory.
No - the iMac. the new ones - the ones that started shipping in December. The 21" is closed - no user access. The 27" does allow the user to access the RAM.

It's a shame they decided to take that route. One reason Windows machines are so popular, aside from the price, is the total access to everything inside. I got a 21" iMac in October, and it has the easy access panel on the bottom. Remove two screws and slide in the memory.

I would guess they think that people who would be the type to even consider opening a computer would go go the larger machine. But I agree it is too bad.

Seldom do I doubt you, CaptainC, certainly not in matters photographic. Despite Crucial's denials, in all humility, I provide the attached as what might pass for evidence.

So AppleCare covers any Apple questions - it's not just an extended warranty?

Might not cover EVERY Apple question, but would cover hardware issues, OS X, and included software. Not certain about added software, such as Aperture, but it would only cost you a phone call to find out.

Apple products are top notch as is their service. I bought a refurb mac book air about five years ago and did not buy Apple Care. Two months ago one of the hinges broke so that it would not close fully although it still worked fine. I took it in to the local Apple store to see if it was worth fixing or just use it until it quit. They replaced the screen with a brand new one - no charge. The tech said it was a "known fault" and it would be covered indefinitely.

Go on Apple's website and read about the iMac. The way they describe putting the thing together makes me think that it will be impossible to access the interior unless they provide a way.
I just bought a 27" imdc for under $2000. Next to my camera, be photo tool I own.
Sorry, my last post was garbled. It was refurbished 2011 iMac. Should have said "best" photo tool.
