Okay, I know the debate between Apple and PC has been raged here many times before, but I'm not looking for comparison opinions. I have the opportunity to buy a PC or Apple through my workplace and am strongly considering the Apple. I have always used PC and have never even looked at an Apple before, but too many satisfied Apple users has peaked my interest. What I am really asking for is opinions on what I should be looking for in a good Apple desktop. My main focus of usage will be store and edit photos, as well net surf. I do some music and movie downloads but not a ton of that. I have a cap $2,500. I would appreciate any advice. Because I work for a college I will pay no tax and there will be some discounts although I do not know what they include.

I have the iMac with the 21.5" screen. Never use an Apple prior. Only use it to run Lightroom and Elements. I very happy with it and recommend it highly.

You cannot beat the iMac, but with the student discount, add in 8GB RAM, and if still in your budget get the Retina monitor. ABOVE ALL ELSE get an Applecare policy--Applecare is why Mac computers are so superior to Windows--you can call 7 days a week and speak to someone with expertise on any issue and he/she will speak in American English!!!

I have the 21.5" desk top and love it. I bought it with 4 GB of memory and added 4 GB of Kingston memory after I purchased the Mac. The additional memory only cost $15 through Best Buy, that's much less expensive that buying 8GB of memory at the time you purchase the computer.

Yes, be sure and get the right one. I found the information on the Apple site before I bought the extra memory.

OK- need to straighten some things out here.

If you get the 21" iMac, you have to order it with the RAM as it cannot be added by the user later. The 27" iMac DOES have access to the RAM slots.
I know this was not true on earlier models, but it it the case now due to the slim profile.

Get it with 16GB.

Hi Captain C, are you talking about the laptop? I bought my 21.5" iMac desktop a year and a half ago and am able to add memory.

No - the iMac. the new ones - the ones that started shipping in December. The 21" is closed - no user access. The 27" does allow the user to access the RAM.

You can still get 16GB, but you have to order it that way.

Yes, but it costs considerably more to buy it installed, then if you install it yourself! But now there is no choice, unless you get the 27"

The 27" iMac is a dream for photo editing! The bigger screen provides lots of room for both the image and palettes in Editing software. The newer model will also expand to 32 gigs of RAM.
