If I finally get up the courage to post a picture please take it easy on me.
I'm trying my best to learn but frankly just do not know what makes a great picture from a mediocre one. Thank you all for all for your post I learn a little more from each one.

Hi Ken
Welcome to UHH.
Remember that most of the pictures you are admiring and that intimidate you were probably not a single snapshot but the best of perhaps dozens of shots of the same subject or area.
I remember one shot of a lizard where the photographer said he/she took 250 pictures in order to get that one good shot!
Find one of your pictures that you think reasonable and post it.
You may well get some constructive criticism and will learn from it.
I would guess that you are worried about destructive criticism?
I would hope that no one on UHH would do that. But if you do - ignore it as unbecoming of anyone who considers themselves a photographer. At some period of time, we have all had to pick up a camera for the first time. Perhaps for some it was a long time ago and they have forgotten their first efforts.
You'll never get better until you're willing to take the risk.
In reality you may be your toughest critic. Here's where you can get constructive criticism or advice for free. Having a second set of eyes look at your work may give you ideas that you hadn't considered yet. Helps the growing process. We are all at different levels. And, the professional photographer didn't always start at the top. Be kind to yourself and enjoy the process. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and we all see differently. If the picture puts a smile on your face be at peace with yourself that's what matters most.

Kenm54, it isn't personal, it's just photography. Suck it up and don't worry about it. I don't post pics because I don't know and cannot figure out how to do it but I don't worry about being ignorant and stupid; it is what I am. Everyone says it is easy but they are wrong, I am not wrong they are. I can bend wood and install a beautiful handrail on a spiral staircase but I cannot post pictures of it so I have to settle for knowing it is good work and not sharing it. Ken just drink another cup of coffee and post your pics and let the pixils fall where they may!

As Cliff said to Georg Festrunk: Man, you guys have been hosed, baby"
"Hosed?! Count me in!"... so here i go...
I always say this- I would rather post a picture that had issues, and got constructive criticism, than posted one where 20 people told me how wonderful it is.
Would you rather whip a 10 year old's butt in a tennis match? or have Gabriella Sabatini whip yours?... heh-heh
(Showing my age with that one)
We all had to start somewhere and deleted loads of wrongly taken images so fire away. You will not be put against a wall and executed but we will give you praise when needed and guidence when we think you need it.

Just go for it. I've been shooting since 1965 and I still get only 15 or so keepers out of every 100. Thank God for digital.

Know the feeling - but, all it takes is the first time and then you'll be fine. Another thing is that you are the final test of good or bad - its whether you, and those close to you, like it or not is what matters
Hi Kenm54, Just been on here since July. I have posted some photos and the folks on here are very helpful, kind and encouraging. It gets easier with each photo you post. I cannot believe how much I have learned on here. I learn every day! Go ahead and post a photo....I think you'll be glad you did!!!
