I think some of you have the wrong idea of what the OP was asking about. chelesphotograpy and I have been talking via PM and I have given her some pointers on how I and another photographer do photography/portrait parties.

A portrait/photography party is like a tupperware party. A host invites her friends over with the idea that they will sit around and talk, visit, have a couple of drinks and have their pictures taken by a professional photographer that has been hired for the evening. The photographer offers a "group" rate and runs the evening like a mini-photo session. Everyone participating pays the photographer for a 15+ minute session, the photographer delivers whatever package was agreed to and the host gets a discount or extra product.

Everyone has fun, the photographer hopefully gets some new future clients from the event and makes some quick easy money.

The wife and I threw a dinner party a few months ago, and the "cost" of the invite was for each guest to bring at least 10 photos on digital media. After dinner, over adult beverages each person's collection was displayed on an large projector. I fear I am the only hard core photo-nut in the group of, I think we had 12 guests that night. The rest just do the old memory jogger photography thing, point and shots of special places or occassions. Two couples had just returned from vacations, one to Italy and the other from Africa.

It went great, only 2 showed up without photos. Everyone loved it, and the 2 non-players want a repeat to save themselves. Next time, no photos and you do the dishes.

Highly recommend it. Next time will be a Evening Garden Party with a large outdoor screen.

I used to do these all the time in Birmingham where I interacted with many students and teachers in a photography program. Just as described. Maybe six to twelve people plus significant others. Food & snacks. One time I made the mistake of serving Big Mama Margaritas and everyone passed out once the slide show started.

Like the ones that you can find on meetup?

Do as search for photography in your area, there may already be a group.

OR

A gathering of people to have a "party."

That looks a great site.....Thanks

Thanks!

Maybe you should call it the 12 steps of Photohaulics.

What a wicked idea... so many interesting possibilities and opportunities. I'm always up for a party and adding photography to the mix could make for interesting. The idea of everyone bringing 10 photos is brilliant and I would agree that the invitation should specify a penalty for anyone who shows up without photos. There are a number of avid photographers that always show up to the local hockey games. Maybe an end of season party where everyone brings their best photos and invite the team as well. We'll keep you all posted!

It is doubtful I would go to a photo party....I would be bored. At least with Tupperware, everyone is getting to look and handle the items and hostess is paying attention to everyone. Maybe I have the wrong idea.
I think to be interesting it would have to have good prizes, good food, drinks and something to really keep people occupied while you are taking pics of guests. Maybe combining a Tupperware or makeup sales party with a photo opp. would be fun. Might also save some expense.

I would suggest that photography may already be doing this and often. I belong to one meetup group that has a monthly meeting at a restaurant to discuss photography and show pictures. To join meetup is free, each group may have a small fee to be part of it. Another group has an picnic each summer and a holiday party as well as one or two phot scavenger hunts. Most all photo meetup groups have many events (almost every weekend) to go shoot at a location. Shooting with a group has it advantages.

You can seal in that fresh, youthful appearance.

Another twist on the photo party is to take any gathering, wedding, christening, prom, job promotion/leaving etc.

Provide enough cheap disposable cameras for each guest and ask them all to take a few photographs during the event.

Collect up the cameras at the end, and then YOU process the photos, print as thumbnails and solicit sales from the printing.

The cameras can be used many times and your expertise is used in cropping, post processing etc.

I experienced this at a wedding some years ago, and it was very successful for the photographer. To be fair he also provided a back drop on a stand for more formal photographs and took some himself.
