I am trying some new ideas this year. I want to do photography parties. Has anyone ever done this and if so how did you work it?
Thanks!
Michele

Parties?
Like the ones that you can find on meetup?

http://www.meetup.com/find/

Do as search for photography in your area, there may already be a group.

OR

A gathering of people to have a "party."

I've do boudior photography parties, I tend to book two or so a year and I know a.children photographer that books portrait parties. She does fairly well with them.

Basically it's like a mini session only instead of being at my studio or at a public location its is at a private home and the host gets a little extra product.

If you are looking at something like this, feel free to send me a pm with questions and I will be happy to answer them for you.

Michele, I've never heard of photography parties. Is this something like a Tupperware party, where one person makes his/her home available, a representative from TW comes to show (and sell) their wares, and friends of the home-owner are the invited clients?
So: One person makes his/her home available, a photographer comes in to take photos and sell them, and friends of the home-owner are the invited clients?

Or is it like a number of photographers getting together in someone's studio, a park, or wherever, to take photos of the same subject: a model, the landscape, etc.

I'll guess at the exact nature of your question as those before me did. I started a camera club of seniors. A couple of the meetings went like this:

Bring photos and matting materials, or even colored paper, and share comments and ideas on how different colors make photos look and feel very differently.

Send people out on a specific assignment (like with contests here) OR everyone go to the same place, and take photos. Then meet up for your party, with food of course :) and enjoy sharing the unique viewpoints that each person found.

A photography party is when someone host a party like a tupperware party. You do a photo shoot of each guest.

I'm hoping to get something like this going on the weekend.

I promised my sister a sitting with her family and told her I'd like to try my hand at glamour photography if she would pose for me.

We set a date, but oddly enough, it's in her house on the day of her daughter's birthday party. May find a corner to set up my umbrella and take portraits of the guests.

Morning

I just read your thread about parties. Im trying to earn a little from my photography but before divingh in and trying to do weddings I would like to start with parties. Ive only done one for a friend.

Can you tell me the best way to really start this way and what equipment I should have. I have a canon 60d and a canon 580 flash gun

Sounds interesting - thought came to my mind is if everyone had a computer they could connect to their camera and then all take some or same shots and compare "right now" - share tips and suggestions. Maybe 4-5-6 people, any more, I think would be rather awkward.

Good reference. Something like that had never occurred to me. I wouldn't have thought it would be a success.

The wife and I threw a dinner party a few months ago, and the "cost" of the invite was for each guest to bring at least 10 photos on digital media. After dinner, over adult beverages each person's collection was displayed on an large projector. I fear I am the only hard core photo-nut in the group of, I think we had 12 guests that night. The rest just do the old memory jogger photography thing, point and shots of special places or occassions. Two couples had just returned from vacations, one to Italy and the other from Africa.

It went great, only 2 showed up without photos. Everyone loved it, and the 2 non-players want a repeat to save themselves. Next time, no photos and you do the dishes.

Highly recommend it. Next time will be a Evening Garden Party with a large outdoor screen.
