Taking fewer lenses on vacation

You may want to confirm with Canon but I don't believe an extender will work with the 24-105 lens. Without buying a longer reach lens, you might check if your camera let you choose crop mode which basically crops the image to appear 1.6 times larger. The downside is the image size in megapixels is reduced quite a bit. You might consider buying a used lens lens (for example at MPB.com). If you don't need an "L" lens there are some bargain EF zooms.

I was in Barcelona last year. Your 24-105 should be sufficient. You may want a faster lens for inside churches or museums. If you plan to visit Sagrada Familia (I highly recommend it), make reservations before you go so you don't get shut out. Have a great trip.

I personally use a Sigma. 8-16, pared with a Nikon 18-300 (unless I know I will be needing something else)

Just a suggestion look at the history of the focal length you use most in the past for your favorite shots. I reviewed the lens focal length I used on my D500 (DX) a recent trip to Slovenia, and Northern Italy and most shots were wide angle and about 25% greater than 100 mm and only 10% at 300mm.

I have a Canon 5D Mark ii with the 24-105L lens and wonder if it makes sense to get a 2X extender for my trip to Spain. I also have an older Canon 75-300 lens but don't want to carry both. Concerned about quality with the extender and also whether a good one exists that fits my camera. (Thanks, Canon...) Also considered a used Canon 55-200, but Rockwell said that my camera couldn't handle the color problems.

Check your owners manual for the number and location of focus points used for AF vs the aperture. At f/8 (lens + 2.0TC) you may only have one focus point and AF may be very slow. Also, because a 2.0 TC visibly degrades image quality, you will probably be better off not using a TC. For travel, 14-100mm should be enough.

My equipment is FujiFilm. Until I was almost 80, I normally traveled with multiple bodies and several lenses. On my last extended trip, I limited myself to one body, XT-5 and two lenses, a 14 mm prime, and a 16/70 mm zoom. I rarely used the prime, finding the zoom to meet the vast majority of opportunities. I leave tomorrow for six weeks in Italy and will take only the one body and the zoom lens because I found that that setup rendered the best overall set of images I ever produced on a trip. I’ve spent a lot of time in Spain, I believe you will find the 24/105 L a perfect match, totally sufficient. My 16/70 is the equivalent of your 24/105.

I have the Canon 5D iii. Never use it anymore. I am in love with the Tamron AF 28-400mm APSC lens that I adapt successfully with the Fujifilm X-T2. At F/8 it's sharp...

My go to lens for a single vacation lens is the nikon 18-140, 35mm equivalent 36-210 and it's all a I need. Your 24-105 is better on the wide end and severely deficient on the tele. If the Tamron 28-200 DX will work on your camera and is a decent lens it seems like a no brainer. For $150.00 from B&H it won't put much of a dent in your budget

Here's my kit for travel and everyday walk around. Sony a6600 (replacing today with a a6700) Sigma MC-11 EF to Sony E adapter and the Tamron 18-400mm lens. I am losing hope that Tamron will make a Sony E mount version of this lens, but they also have an 18-300mm Sony mount which I might try if the 18-400 wears out. It's small light weight and very capable.

Unless I require a really long telephoto or intend to do some macro work, I generally only travel with a 10-18mm wide angle and an 18-135mm standard lens (my mainline camera is a Sony a6500 mirrorless APS-format). And since my Sony has their 'ClearImage Zoom' feature, I can extend the focal length on any lens by up to 2X, I have no need to pack a physical extender.

I have taken multiple European trips. After much cogitating I bought a Sony A6600 with an 18-135 lens Pretty much exactly what you have. I used my iPhone 13 for quickies and back up. I am totally happy with that kit. It is light weight , versatile and decent quality. On a river cruise on the Danube and Rhine, I only used the CIZ a few times, and found the effective 27-200 range very adequate. Your 10-18 would have come in handy a few times ,but not enough to warrant the extra bulk. I'm sure Bill will find that most of the photo ops fall into the range of his 24-105.

When I’m on vacation I take my Nikon P&S. Very nice images, no dragging gear and weight, no changing lenses, 22x zoom, fits in my pocket, fantastic colors.

I just returned from Spain and only used the nikon 18-200 and the 11 -16 2.8 wide angle lenses. The latter was very useful for churches and museums. I also brought the 50mm and the 85mm 1.8, but didn't use them.

To carry the equipment I had my usual camera bag for the airplane. But to walk around I used a similar version of the lowepro passport sling bag, which makes it easy to handle the camera, batteries, etc, while having it securely in front of you. Has a pocket for the necessary water bottle as well.

Lastly, look into a reasonable phone plan for your cell phone to cover you abroad.

Firstly,I’m not sure that Mr. Rockwell is the guy I would take advice from. If you don’t want to take the larger lens…don’t. I often travel with a 23MM Fuji X100 series and once in awhile for unique locales such as a safari a larger lens mounted to a mirrorless camera (helps keep the weight and bulk down). But, that’s me, your needs may be much different. So maybe chose what you need over what I need? Have fun!!!

Leave it all at home, take your phone and “splurge” on a small pocket camera with a fast zoom lens. I like the Panasonic lx and fs series but every manufacturer has something similar. Canon’s G5xmkii is another example. I swapped my 5d stuff for the small Rebel with new lenses then went smaller still on next trip. I’m happy, my wife is very happy and the images are fine.
