Taking fewer lenses on vacation

I have a Canon 5D Mark ii with the 24-105L lens and wonder if it makes sense to get a 2X extender for my trip to Spain. I also have an older Canon 75-300 lens but don't want to carry both. Concerned about quality with the extender and also whether a good one exists that fits my camera. (Thanks, Canon...) Also considered a used Canon 55-200, but Rockwell said that my camera couldn't handle the color problems.
Appreciate your help and snark,

IIRC 55-200 is apsc.

I have that exact same gear as you and would never take any of it on vacation. Between that gear and my (semi-ancient) phone, the phone wins for vacation pix.

There are verrrrrry many options *between* phones and big SLR gear, and some is rather cheap. Thaz my usual travel gear.

Your desire/decision....

Years ago I got away from having a ton of lenses. I took my 18-200 and a 50 to Iceland. As a matter of fact, they're all I use anymore. And it's a Sigma, not a Canon...OMG!
Of your two above, I'd just use the 24-105.
Would an extender really be that bad? Unacceptable for any <possible> difference/effects?
I could get an extender for mine, but elected not to do so.
Just because "Rockwell" doesn't care for something?...
I'll live with the limitations of the 200 end.
And I would consider a 2x extender better than not having the 210 effective focal length if I wanted more than the 105.

Your decision. I made mine.

I can't give you a good answer, but make sure the extender will fit your lens, they won't fit all lenses. Also, remember you will lose 2 stops of light with a 2x extender so your f/4 will become an f/8. As to image quality, I'm sure there will be some loss, how much, I don't know and only you will know what is acceptable to you. Best wishes on your trip and be sure to have a good time

Thanks, I'll bring my phone, too, but I can't resist the DSLR at this point.

Yeah, I've read a lot of cynicism about Rockwell, so I guess I should take the proverbial grain of salt.
Thanks

If you MUST take the 5D - here is the lens I recommend for you - Tamron 28-200 XR - it MUST be the XR version - https://www.ebay.com/itm/305489612854?itmmeta=01HTTRFRJRJEJ379YCD4CFZF7M&hash=item4720999036:g:lLIAAOSwjUVmDLUO&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA0IB4dTMzdnSsYPs%2F6TARSBlbRiJtdCJN4vIPViZD78xCv7ee7XNUBGVPOAkSmgtolgSn4XiSCGjK8SqWEoDroMSbhqvnf7jsat6ztOwem9tFY1MuBLoDazd7sA0vZe2ldVWWqYdp7gHrZmiQbQvF%2FJDMmRAhTUUQ4gdjHIABv6JW6wX8SJLxOxTZRNGNOLWXYoiyEMTuezppP7f5%2BAZP2nLou%2BGZ71jKCV3M26IxvYWJ6T76eL%2B0oIYXaBRHgf79gDprOSi9GTg2Q1kifhXtS%2Bk%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR7yJv9jWYw

There will be no AF on the 5D II @ f8 ( 2X on f4 ) of the 24-105. You MIGHT get a 1.4X Kenko to work but NO Canon TC will work with that lens.

Bill, I think you have what you need a full frame camera with a 2.8 zoom (24-105). I would not buy a 2.0 extender, but I do like my 1.4 better (may use it for the eclipse, but not the 2.0). In street photography, I shoot 24-120 and I am very happy. At the end of any year, my 24-70 2.8 is always the winner. Hope this helps,
Cliff

The 24-105mm lens cannot be used with an extender. The Canon extender protrudes into the rear of the lens and will not physically mount to the 24-105.

The Canon 24-105mm is an F/4 lens not an F/2.8.

Sell it all get a smaller mirrorless with no more than 2 lenses
You’ll be glad you did
I have 2 vacations
1-family vacation, minimum camera gear (OMD with 12-45)
2-photo vacation, destination denotes gear taken
It’s your vacation

I'd take the 24-105, if you like shooting the interior of the old Church's you'll need a short fast lens. I lived in Spain 4 years while racing MX. Where in Spain are you going?

When on vacation I leave my BIG STUFF at home. I only take my Sony HX99, a great pocket camera that has a Zeiss 24-720mm lens, shoots RAW, shoots panoramic four different ways, pop up viewfinder, shoots auto fill flash, and best of all fits in my shirt pocket or my belt pouch.
TRAVEL RIGHT, TRAVEL LITE.

You'll want to use <Quote Reply> so your replies into this thread have context.

The 2x is useless for any of your lenses. Assuming that's a Canon 2x model, it won't physically attach to any of the three lenses you've listed. Moreover, the EF-S lens will not physically attach to your 5DII. You must have another camera you're not mentioning for the 55-200?

Take the 5DII and the 24-105L and have a great time.
