Yup....
Travel light, take everything, buy a new camera, use your phone, ......

I'll bet all this really helps, eh?

I have a Canon 5D Mark ii with the 24-105L lens and wonder if it makes sense to get a 2X extender for my trip to Spain. I also have an older Canon 75-300 lens but don't want to carry both. Concerned about quality with the extender and also whether a good one exists that fits my camera. (Thanks, Canon...) Also considered a used Canon 55-200, but Rockwell said that my camera couldn't handle the color problems.
Appreciate your help and snark,

My travel kit is a Nikon DSLR, usually a D800e, and a Nikon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 G AF-S lens. I usually add a fast prime lens for indoor and shoots at night, like a 24mm, 35mm or a 50mm. I used to take a 70-200mm but stopped traveling with it as I used it rarely and it was not worth lugging it around.

After seeing the great results a 1" sensor can give you, I picked up a Sony RX100 vi for my travel camera, gives me a 24 to 200 lens and flash. Has all the settings of my a7ii and a6500. It is a complete camera bag that fits into my pocket.

There's enough varied opinions here.

Very true. Many varied opinions here and many times they will suffice. However there are times when I don’t want to wait for these opinions. Let’s say you want to buy a Nikon 85 1.4 and ask who has one how is it? After you wait 6 hours I respond with, yes I have one super sharp and an awesome lens! Not exactly going to make me run out and spend 2 grand. Instead I go to Rockwell look up Nikon 85 1.4 and read 30 paragraphs, look at 40 different photos and read about 10 different lens comparisons. Just my opinion. 🙏

I found when I traveled with my compact camera I spent more time with my wife enjoying her company and taking in the place I was visiting than fiddling around with cameras and lenses.

Hi, all
Thanks for the unexpected avalanche of responses (and sorry not for the incorrect <reply> button, a first timer's mistake.) I'm still all over the place on this, but for clarity, I'm more "serious" about my photos than the word "vacation" suggests, so I'll end up on that side of the balance, but you folks have given me a lot to think about, and I appreciate it despite the fact that you keep changing my mind, which is not pleasant, and you failed collectively to provide one absolutely uncontroversial, extremely high quality, low weight, totally affordable approach.
Bill.

Hi, all br Thanks for the unexpected avalanche of ... (show quote)

Bill, one thing I do when traveling is to get up early and go out and start shooting as the city is waking up. I usually do this for one hour before I meet my wife (and other travelers in the group) for breakfast.

The Canon Power Shot SX 70 HS is light, quite small and good for long telephotos. My wife uses this. It is fine for internet size postings. I have been well served with the 24-105 in France, Spain, Portugal and several other trips. I was happy with my D5 Mark 3 and love my R5 with the RF 24-105. For wide angles such as inside a cathedral, a newer iPhone has been easier than taking my 16-35 Canon.

That's where you and I are different.
Years ago I saw a Sigma 18-200 at B&H and I bought it.
Still very pleased.
No 20 questions, no 6 months of research.

Just my opinion.
(Yea, everybody has one.)

Just my opinion...and I'm not an expert by any means, but I'd take two lenses max. I'd take the 55-200 and either your primary lens or the 50mm. Use your phone to fill in any gaps in coverage. The 50mm is small and won't take up much space.

I took a cruise from Japan, stopped at Taiwan, Hong Kong, Viet Nam, Singapore last December. I got Canon 6D with 28-135, Canon t6i w 10-18, a Juji S9200 50x zoom, and I don't even had time to use my cell phone. These cameras were enough to cover almost any situation, and they were not that heavy in my back pack. The problem with phone is that if you use it a lot, to a certain level, you cannot open any message with picture ! Important thing is you bring what you are familiar with, and try them before the trip, bring at least 4 batteries. The bag must be waterproof.

I was in Spain and Portugal a few months ago. My 24-200 mm lens was all I used while having a 90-300 as well. This is Olympus equipment. I used to use much heavier Nikon. Don’t be burdened with heavy camera equipment and put a damper on the trip. Take your 24-105 and be happy. No TC. IMHO

My iPhone 13 pro max has the ability to shoot in RAW. I attach a connector from my computer to the phone and download the photos. I can then process them to my heart's content.

I always have my regular camera with me with a 16-80 Nikkor lens, which gives me a great range of shots for vacation. Your vacay should be 100% fun and 0% worrying about heavy camera equipment.

I agree with Chg-Canon here
The 24-105 is f/4 already and even if you could mount a 2x you would be walking around with a 48-210 f/8
Optically, extenders need to be matched to lenses or quality suffers. In the case of the 24-105vit physically does not fit an extender.
Only you know how important pictures are to you, and how much you want to carry. The 24-105 is a pretty versatile focal range. If you absolutely need another lens I would recommend one of the 70-200 f/4's, and is the same or better quality as the lens you own.
On the other hand, if you only bring one lens, you never have to think about which lens you should use on any given day.
Remember, it is a given that you will Always see pictures that would be better with a lens you left home or didn't buy. My advice is do not worry about that, and use the 24-105. Frankly because it is F/4 I would rather have a tripod than another slow lens. There are some great churches in Spain and they are mostly dark. The tripod lets you work at base iso & f/5.6-8
Good Luck

I carried my 24-105 f/4 and my 70-200 f/2.8 on vacation. My wife asked me to travel light. So I started to take only the 24-105. Not only was she happy, but I enjoyed the actual vacation more. Time w/family instead of just looking for another photo.
