Well, I broke down and ordered a Nikon D810 with roughly 15,000 shutter actuations, leaving me with about 185,000 to use, meaning it should be like a new camera . . .

That would be the equivalent of about 5,200 36-exposure rolls of film, unless you are in the habit of taking video clips or using burst mode (several shots with a single press of the shutter button).

I went to Ahwahnee Junior High School for most of the first school year they were open, which is in the same ZIP code as Fresno Community College. At Ahwahnee, math class stank, as did the English grammar class. Teacher tried to tell us about first-, second-, third-, and fourth-class words, better known as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, but the teacher insisted on the newfangled terminology that I have never heard before or since. The science class was very good and the history class, where I learned about the U.S. Constitution, was good, which I took more seriously than most history classes at that time period.

I am relatively new to Fresno, bought here almost 5 years ago. I was simply priced out of San Jose, couldn't afford to buy, you need at least $1,000,000.00 for a down payment anywhere you might want to live. And rent for a 3 bedroom house is at least $4,000.00 a month anywhere you might want to live. I have friends and relatives, including a sister who live within 50 miles of my house in northwest Fresno.

I am somewhat aware of the schooling.

I have been too influenced by my previous film camera experience, you can't afford to just press the shutter release button and let 'er rip! Now with the digital cameras you can do that, "let 'er rip" it has almost no cost unless you print every or even most of the photos.

I am still fascinated with my F4, I have all 3 configurations for it F4, F4s & F4e. All buttons or knobs. The F5 is a more electronic version and I really like both of them. This Nikon D810 that I am getting hopefully in 2 more days is really intimidating me, so at first I will set as much as I can to "Auto" and shoot everything that is in front of me. Then put all on my laptop and 27" monitor and critique them, what is bad and what is good in the photos.

I wouldn't expect Ahwahnee to be all that similar to my experience when I went there about 57 years ago. Ronald Reagan was first elected governor that year.

What have been the greatest benefits in your shooting since the switch? I'm well aware of the D850's capabilities and would love to have one, but in my shooting, I can't justify the extra expense for now.

The noise! Is number1, I shoot med jpeg which is plenty large for my 13x19 prints, downsizing cuts an already clean sensor noise dramatically in my experience. I’m no “Digital Scientist” but there’s an explanation out there somewhere.
Moving up from a D700 I really notice the difference, probably not so much from a D810 though.
The amazing files out of camera do it for me.
