Well, I broke down and ordered a Nikon D810 with roughly 15,000 shutter actuations, leaving me with about 185,000 to use, meaning it should be like a new camera, it is rated as Excellent by MPB. It is supposed to arrive by next Thursday 4/4/2024.

Since most of my lenses are FX or 35mm film camera lenses, I won't have to buy lenses, FOR NOW. My version of the Trinity is my Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8, Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8 and Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8.

I will begin using it as soon as I have reviewed the Nikon D810 books and owners manual that comes with it, and done some settings changes or not.

David Busch recommends settings that I might use at least until I know better. That will be a long time coming, because there is so much the D810 is capable of that I need to learn. I might smarten up and enroll in a photography class here at Fresno Community College.

Enjoy! The only difference between men and boys is the size and cost of their toys.

I love my D810!! I purchased mine from B&H a few years ago. It is a Nikon refurbished and arrived with 176 shutter count.

A class with an instructor can be very beneficial since we all have our ways of doing things and there is always more to learn. Plus if you have any questions there is a person right there to answer.

Best wishes to you and your D810 for many happy years together taking photos and making memories!!

Dodie

Thank you, UTMike, luvmypets and mr spock.

Anxiety is my order of the day, but I am trying to read the David Busch book to learn what I can before the D810 arrives. You have to know that I will just take it out of the packing an load in a battery, mount my 28-70mm f/2.8 and look for things to shoot.

I have had mine for many years. I use for sports which it isn't the fastest fps 4-6 depending on what your settings are etc. It does a fine job with all shooting. You will enjoy this camera, don't know what you had before but once you learn how to use all it has to offer you will be happy you purchased. Have fun and practice, practice, practice! Thanks BE SAFE!!

So, what camera did you come from? Full Frame (D850) is a different beast...but not really! I love the bigger sensor, it produces images with a different look despite what the naysayers say! But it also sees everything. Little mistakes and shortcomings that I didn't see before with DX cameras. So, a bit of a learning curve! But a fun curve to climb! I'm sure that you will really like the full frame world!

Previous cameras I still have:
Nikon FE, Nikon FE2, Nikon FA, Nikon F3, Nikon F4, & Nikon F5.

Nikon D100, Nikon D200 & Nikon D300.

All my lenses are FX or 35mm film except 3 DX lenses. So no need to rush there, I'm set for the long term, well short term anyhow.

I loved my D810 when I had it. If you are not familiar with Auto ISO, I suggest you try it out, in Aperture mode. Adding a 300mm f4 pf or 500mm f5.6 pf lens will really make you love the camera.

I have 2 70-300mm lenses one is 4-5.6 D and the other is a 70-300 4.5-5.6 D DX. Both work well when I have used them.

I also have a Tamron 250-500 f/5.6 - manual focus with its 2x which makes it a 500-1,000. It has served me well when I used it. It mostly sits in its case now.

Based on what you have used in the past I’d say…quit worrying and relax, you know how to use this camera out of the box.
The additional settings regarding focusing and metering will perhaps be your biggest hurdle.
I went from D700 to acquiring a D850 on a great deal from a pro acquaintance. The additional settings on the D850 were easy-peasy. Oh, and the D810 is…the 2and greatest DSLR ever made, at least by Nikon.

What have been the greatest benefits in your shooting since the switch? I'm well aware of the D850's capabilities and would love to have one, but in my shooting, I can't justify the extra expense for now.

I still use my 17mm-35mm f2.8, on my Z9, with the ftz2, a few times a week when shooting groups of people at events.
I have the 14-24 f mount, along with the rest of the trinity, and the 24-120 Z mount lens. But these days I am using the Tamron 35mm-150mm f2-f2.8 Z mount lens with the 17-35, as my go to combo.
I also have my D810 as the backup body.
Enjoy your new, very capable kit!!
