All of my Nikons (4 different models) can do that job in-camera thru the Retouch menus.

You can Select multiple files and then theres about three more buttons to press. The jpgs are still on the card. Downloading would be additional normal procedure.

Why not just answer the question he asked?

Because often on here we see questions that seem to indicate the poster has a limited knowledge in an area and might not really asking for what they need. If you have questions about someone’s questions it serves them better to better understand what they’re really looking for.

I use Irfanview (free) for batch conversions, but I don't know if it will convert NEF. No, it can't do that.

IrfanView will extract the embedded jpg preview but it won't demosaic the raw data. That requires the application of parameters such as black/white points, white balance, contrast, etc.

The greater question is "why"? If you are not processing in software that recognizes Nikon raw files, just shoot in jpg. Is this a good idea? No. Note, Nikon offers a free program.

Based on your title and not your comment (really need to know the "why"), you are trying to lessen HD space. If this is the real question, there are several solutions.

That is my thought too.

Why do you want to convert Raw to JPG before processing your NECs. Seems pointless.

I use DXO-PL 7 as my NEF raw processor. I can do a batch in export to make jpgs from NEfs. But I am sure that just about any raw processor could do the same thing. FYI, I do this rarely as I prefer to to export images to a different format one at a time. The free NX Studio from Nikon probably can do it too.

The OP didn't care to respond back since yesterday morning. I will wait a few more days. But I do have a reason to do that. I shoot raw + jpeg so if I need the image right away before having time to do the processing I have it. Otherwise I use only the raw files. Now if the OP camera can only shoot raw or jpeg or he at the time decided to shoot only raw but now needing to deliver the jpeg immediately so he woud want to quickly convert all of the raw to jpeg. However, of course I hope the OP will check back with us.

The original question was strait forward.

What program do you use to batch convert .nef to .jpg.

OP didn't ask how or why, just a program name.

I couldn't answer because I don't batch convert.

Why not? My objective is to change .nef into good quality .jpg in another folder on my 1T C drive. Then reorganize sequence, and finally add to a Thumb Drive that will play a slide show. Do TV's recognize .nef? Don't know.

Space for my current pictures has 688 GB of space available with a backup drive. No worries mate.

"Sorry" for the "delay" in responding. Fact is i do have other obligations for my time as I am not a full time computer photographer.

Understand that the .net presents better and more options to post process, if needed before converting to an email attachment, TV slide show, etc. The .nef would be used for a print.

Thank you for checking back with us. So which software do you decided to use or did you try any suggestion at all? Keep us posted.

Notice I said "before processing" in my reply. NEC or other RAW files need to be processed before being made in to JPG or TIF files or they look worse than right out of the camera JPG. Thus if you only want JPGs with no processing, shoot JPGs and don't bother with RAW / NEC at all.
