We did not own BB guns, but we did have the beach, less than a 10 minute walk and played safely outside 10 - 12 hours a day. We played baseball, football, softball, lots of games with a Spaldine pink rubber ball, games with popsicle sticks, stick ball, games with pen knives, board games like Monopoly, Parchesi, card games, ...

Most of us had jobs at 14 or even younger. I worked in my Dad's market at age 9, ...
Life was different, life was good!!

What a beautiful childhood!!

We tended to do the same thing in the Bronx. But we lived up the hill from Yankee Stadium so a lot of games from the bleachers were also in my childhood.

Those were the good old days! I was born in 1947. I remember playing outside all day, getting sunburned (what the heck was sunscreen... never heard of it back then), then staying out after dark playing hide and seek or any games we could make up with the neighbor kids, not having to worry about some nutjob walking off with one of your friends.

I got sunburned, too. Now I go to the dermatologist every six months and get something cut off or frozen off. Ah, childhood!

No BB gun? Back in the early 50’s it was a right of passage where I was from…

Hi, Mark,
I too lived like that when growing up.

The question is, what happened and why?

Doesn’t everybody look back on the innocence of childhood as a special tome of their lives, and mourn its (inevitable) loss?

Not everyone.

There are still people alive who know that listening to, believing, and acting on reports from children who had been abused wasn't very widespread in their youth.....
....and those who actually did listen to and believe those reports from a child, seldom.....very, very, very, very, very, very, very seldom ever did anything to help the child.

I too grew up in the same wonderful environment, and I fully expect that our great grandchildren, when they are our age will be posting their “good old days” remembrances. I’ll bet if we could find it, our great grandparents also had similar thoughts. But, yeah, those days of our youth really were wonderful.

Sometimes I chuckle at all the "misty, watercolored memories" of the good old days. Days when we were still segregated. Days when women couldn't work because if they were married. Days when a heat attack meant a funeral. Days with no A/C for those hot, summer days. Days with only one car at the house. Days when...

Sounds like days when your glass was “half empty.”

70 years ago on the ranch, bailed hay most of the summer. Feed the cattle, horses the rest of the year. During slack time grabbed a 22, 06, shotgun or fishing pole depending on what time of year it was.

It was a different world back in the old days. Kids have to learn to grow up fast. That is for a whole different topic...K.A.N.
