It leaves out the part of telling them to take their BB guns and don't shoot anyone's dog.

We did not own BB guns, but we did have the beach, less than a 10 minute walk and played safely outside 10 - 12 hours a day. We played baseball, football, softball, lots of games with a Spaldine pink rubber ball, games with popsicle sticks, stick ball, games with pen knives, board games like Monopoly, Parchesi, card games, ...

Most of us had jobs at 14 or even younger. I worked in my Dad's market at age 9, ...
Life was different, life was good!!

What a beautiful childhood!!

We did most of that and stayed out until 9 PM any day in the summer and on weekends in the winter, playing safely at night. It was the least stressful time of my life. Thanks for posting this.

So many different schools and places. My favorite times were living with my grand parents in the Santa Clara Valley before it became Silicon Valley. A small rural school with combined grade levels. Four rooms, 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th, 5th and 6th. Seventh grade had a room to its self to prepare us for the big time--High School. Because ranches were widely separated we usually played alone after school or if we were lucky with one other close enough to ride our bikes to see. We had BB guns, sling shots, played marbles for keeps, fell off roofs and out of trees, rode bikes without helmets and generally did all the dangerous things kids did at that time. Some of us even lived through all those dangerous activities, advanced to our teen years, went to college, joined the military or just went to work. A few of us even became productive citizens

I have often thought it would be great if our grandchildren grew up in the type of environment we did
