Curious if anyone has experience using the Sony FE 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS lens with a Sony 1.4 Tele converter
Compared to the FE 200-600 f5.6-6.3 G OSS regarding image sharpness,auto-focus speed and tracking at the long end. Considering buying the 200-600 but already have the 100-400 and 1.4 converter ? Thanks in advance, JH

I have been struggling with the same question--I have owned the Sony 100-400mm GM for over two years, and last year added the 1.4x teleconverter. I decided against the Sony 200-600mm lens for practical reasons: it is too large and heavy for my style of photography. I carry my equipment on long walks, and I shoot hand-held.

I always put my 100-400mm lens on the Sony A7RIII (I also own a A7III) which gives me the opportunity to crop. Sometimes I use Clear Image Zoom to extend the reach. (Your focusing ability is limited with CIZ--tracking is not an option.) And I find that the 1.4x converter does not degrade the IQ in a significant way. So I am happy with my current set-up.

Having said that, I too am curious to hear from people who have truly compared this set-up with the Sony 200-600mm.

I have had the Sony 100-400 F4.5-5.6 with a 1.4 tc for 4 years. I bought this for a trip to Kenya before the Sony 200-600 f5.6-6.3, came out. I looked into the 200-600.

The 100-400 is better glass and it is lighter weight than the 200-600. With the tc I get 560, which is perfect for me.

That is an incorrect statement. The 100-400 DOES NOT have BETTER glass than the 200-600. This post should be taken down right away.
FAKE NEWS. You do not know what you are talking about.

I have always thought that a F4.5-5.6 is better glass than a f5.6-6.3.

Is this wrong?

BillNikon, you are very mean. If you disagreed with me, just tell me that and prove it. But to say I do not know what I am talking about and that it is FAKE NEWS is just a stupid, mean spirited thing to say.

Look, you cannot come on here and tell false claims. It is one of the major problems here. If your not sure of something, investigate it before you post.
The 100-400 has TWO focusing motors, the 200-600 has ONE. The 100-400 is supposed to focus slightly faster than the 200-600 because of this. But I have noticed no difference between the speed of focusing between these two lenses.
Here is the rub, someone who is considering both to purchase and reads your post may actually believe you. That is the problem.

Reviewers have always touted that the GM lenses are of better quality if price is any indication.

**The 100-400 is better glass and it is lighter weight than the 200-600. **

I did not tell any false claims. A F4.5-5.6 is better glass than a f5.6-6.3.

This is the problem with this site. Jerks like you are rude, nasty and just plain mean. If you disagreed with me you should have stated what you disagreed with, instead of being a stupid jerk and telling me it is FAKE NEWS.

I was stating my opinion, state your opinion instead of being such a jerk.

You never answered my question about the f stops in the 2 lenses.

Both the 200-600 and 100-400 are G master lenses.

This definitely is not true. The 100-400 is a GM (red badge) while the 200-600mm is a G (black badge). The GM is generally considered the professional line. However, Sony produces a number of very good G lenses. I am not telling which they are otherwise I might be banned from this site as well.

BillNikon,

Do you even shoot with Sony or are you still using Nikons?
I was a Nikon Professional Services member for many years before switching to Sony.

As a Retired School Administrator, I would have expected you to be better prepared to have a discussion instead of calling me a liar and posting FAKE NEWS.

Are all your posted credentials FAKE NEWS?
