Hi everyone, I just purchased a new Sony a77 and was wondering does anyone have any good or bad news? I have always used Canon and my last was 40D.
Thanks
I've had my 77 for some time now and love it.
I do not think you held an A77 in your hands maybe an A55 or A57 because my A77 is bigger than my 580
Just make sure you watch out for the lens BUG they pack it in every sony A77 and it will eat a hole in your wallet quick.
If you are like many you don't really need the super high priced lens. The cheaper minolta 75-300 is just as good as the 75-300 sony and a lot cheaper.
started out with my minolta 7000 and 50mm 1:1.7,70-210mm 1:4,35-70mm,75-300mm and a minolta 50mm 1;1.4. sold all of it when I got the SONY a33 with the 18-55MM, 55-200mm, Sony 50mm 1:1.4, sony 30mm 1:2.8 macro, and a sony 500mm mirror( yes auto focus works on the sony lens)
After I got the Sony A77 I sold the A33 and the sony18-55mm,55-200mm lens Wound up with the sony 500mm, the 16-50mm sony 70-300mmG,sigma 18-250mm.
Now I've decided to get rid of most of those lens and keep my new sony70-400G, get the new sony 18-270mm when it is released and will add a sony 35mm 1:1.8. sell all the other lens so I have less to travel with.
This is all to show you what that lens bug will do to you.Don't fall for it. Unless you are a pro or a pixel peeper you don't need all of those. If I had it to do over I would have the sony 18-50mm 1:2.8, 70-300mmG,and 35mm1:1.8
I got one of the first sony A77's and still enjoy it.
Bruce: If you find a 400mm Minolta lens for the Sony for cheap how about posting some info about where you found it. I am looking for one also.
So far it is much faster and the pictures are clearer. I am a beginner but there is a huge difference. I am very happy with my purchase. If someone would have given me both cameras and I did not know which was which I would have picked the Sony hands down.
I have been teaching photography and shooting with Minolta since the early 70's. I used to share my office at the college with a retired Marine Corp diehard Nikon fan. I will not go into details about him but suffice to say that if..."it wasn't a Nikon it wasn't anything." After several years and much discussion about Nikon cameras I purchased a new camera. I test shot 600+ images on Kodachrome film and had them bulk processed and put them up on the table top viewers. He came into the office later that day, saw the images and grabbed his 16x loop magnifier. An hour later he returned to the office and said to me "I see you finally bought a Nikon." At that point I removed my Minolta from my desk drawer. I never had another discussion about which camera brand was best after that incident and we shared that office for the next twelve years.
I'm currently in the process of shooting test images with the a77 now...so far I have not been disappointed.
Enjoy yourself and remember a good camera in the hands of a knowledgeable photographer will almost always (never say always) yield good results.
K Knight,
Thank you, I need to take a photo class as I just have put the camera on auto mode. I would really like to become a good photographer.
Local community colleges are probably the best bang for your buck. Also join a local camera club. You will never lack for someone eager to share information on cameras and techniques. Local photographers like myself also offer workshops in specialty areas thru garden clubs and civic organizations. Above all practice...get to know your camera controls and menus. Remember...we all started out as beginners at one point in our lives. Best of luck to you and enjoy your camera. Have fun with it.
K Knight,
Thank you, I am hoping to get in a class this semester.
Ditto what tainkc said. I'm a real fan of the A77 and am glad I was pushed to get this camera when I retired, booked a trip to Africa to photograph wildlife. It changed my life!
I looked at the specs of the A99 vs. the A77 and can't understand why someone would spend the money on the A99 at $2,700 when you can get the A77 at half the cost. I am happy with my A77 and was wondering if the A99 offered anything that I was missing except the full frame and cannot see any difference.
The Sony a77 is a fine camera. Everybody scares us all about the iso noise. Is it perfect? no. Great? yes!
The A99 has a different objective.
Have had my a77 for about 6 monts now up from the a700
Great choice
Really enjoying all its features, good video too.
Do hope you enjoy your new purchase as much as I have. Off to Canda and Alsaka in July with it should be good
What lens are you using?
