My wife are planning on a fall trip to the Finger Lakes and Adirondack. We are planning around first couple of weeks of October.
We are thinking of Watkins Glen, Letchworth St park. Suggestions on other must stops and maybe some helpful suggestions on lodging. We are not campers, being in our mid 70s. thanks

…make sure you reserve your hotel rooms way, way in advance…it is a hotbed for fall foliage…

In the Adirondacks there was a museum at Blue Mountain Lake. If it is still there it is probably worth going to.

Adirondack Museum, very good last time we were there, but check website for hours, was under remodel last time I checked.

Unfortunately the high peaks area of the Adirondacks may be past peak by then. Try for late September or early October. It will all depend on the amount of rain they get during the year, the quality of their color. I’ve had too many years rained out bc I’m limited to weekend shooting. If it stays warmer longer, like in recent years, you’ll probably be good with early October.

Amen. I had planned about a 9-day road trip thru the finger lakes region, kept watching the weather reports worsening by the day, and finally called off the trip. will try again this year. I have learned to call up there ( and other places I have previously visited ), and see how the leaves are; if good, I'm on tomorrow's plane. Will the flight on short notice cost more? yes. But, how much have I wasted in the past to go somewhere and be disappointed..\ I'd rather pay more and get what I am looking for

I lived in that area for over 60 years. Watkins Glen has great fall views if you are up to the hike. Letchworth is an awesome place, and if you like craft shows they hold one of the largest craft shows in the area on Columbus Day weekend. Also be sure to hit Lake Placid as well as the many beautiful lakes in the Adirondacks.

How far east are you planning on traveling on this trip? If you are up to it, I'd take Route 5 or 5S east along the Mohawk River and the old Erie Canal. I would visit the Stockade area of Schenectady; it's the oldest part of the city from colonial and revolutionary times. It's not a big area and you can walk around it in a couple of hours. I would then take either US 9 or US 4 north into the Adirondacks. US 4 takes you near the Saratoga Battle Field; there are a lot of small towns along the routes (and if you're familiar with James Fenimore Cooper) you'll recognize some of the names from his books).

Thanks for the suggestions

In the Adirondacks, consider the drive up Whiteface Mountain from Wilmington and then take the elevator at the parking lot to the summit. DEC campgrounds in the Adirondacks are open for day use for a small fee-most are located on scenic lakes-but check ahead with respect to make sure they aren't closed for the season. Visit the Saratoga Battlefield, Lake George Battlefield (and Lake George) and Fort Ticonderoga. If you are a Star Trek fan you will enjoy the Star Trek museum in Ticonderoga. Check out the Adirondack museum in Blue Mountain Lake, also the Wild Center in Tupper Lake. If you have the money, the Elk Lake Lodge in North Hudson is a beautiful place to stay (but it's not cheap!). Also check withe NYS DEC to see if the Road into the Boreas Ponds is open.

If you are an art lover, the Hyde Collection Museum in Glens Falls is a must. It has an exceptional array of Old Masters (Rembrandt, Botticelli, etc.), as well as beautiful antique furniture and decor, all displayed in what was the home of the collector, Charlotte Pruyn Hyde. She had brilliant advisors and exceptional foresight in her purchases. The museum is truly a hidden gem. And it's still located right next to the paper mill that created the fortune behind the collection.
