My wife are planning on a fall trip to the Finger Lakes and Adirondack. We are planning around first couple of weeks of October.
We are thinking of Watkins Glen, Letchworth St park. Suggestions on other must stops and maybe some helpful suggestions on lodging. We are not campers, being in our mid 70s. thanks
If you are into glass, Corning Glass Museum in Corning is a must. Ithaca is a typical college town with both Ithaca College and Cornell University. Taughannack Falls State Park is nearby. Geneva is on the northern shore of Lake Seneca and is the home of Hobart and Wm. Smith Colleges (my alma mater). While there are motels and airbnbs in Geneva, two upscale resorts are Geneva-on-the-Lake and Belhurst Castle. The dining rooms at the Belhurst are lovely. I prefer the one in the old castle. If you are into wine or whiskey, there are local wineries and distilleries throughout the Finger Lakes.
Cooperstown, man...if you in finger lakes you gotta do the hall of fame...it's the gateway

Unfortunately the high peaks area of the Adirondacks may be past peak by then. Try for late September or early October. It will all depend on the amount of rain they get during the year, the quality of their color. I’ve had too many years rained out bc I’m limited to weekend shooting. If it stays warmer longer, like in recent years, you’ll probably be good with early October.

Those parks are good ones to hit. Also, in Ithaca there is Taughannock Falls State park with easy trails (flat!) to a great set of falls. In the town of Montour Falls, just down the road from Watkins, there is a nice set of falls as well. Easy to get to in the "heart" of that small town.
In Hammondsport, there is one of the nicer Best Westerns as far as accomodations go. Whether you are a wine drinker or not it can be fun to hit some of the local wineries. Bully Hill is a fun one just to hear some of the backstory about it. It also offers a scenic view of Keuka Lake (one of the Finger Lakes).
On your way to Letchworth, you might want to check out the Mount Morris Dam. At one time they let folks walk in the dam itself.
Just outside of Watkins Glen is a nice little restaurant called The Decoy. Seneca Lake has some boat tours that might still be running if you like that sort of thing. You'll enjoy yourself I am sure.
If u do wildlife Visit Montezuma NWR.
The Glen Curtis Museum at Hammondsport is very worth your time but if you like airplanes and history it's definitely a must.

Cooperstown is a very touristy little berg. Enjoy even if you hate smallball.

*ANY* town whose name ends in "port" is usually rewarding. Its the Erie Canal early developement corridor. Brockport, Fairport, Hammondsport, etc.

Don't miss the great wineries! Plenty of them all around the lakes . . . . CHEERS!
Having lived in that area for eight years, I believe the best are amongst those mentioned above. Watkins Glen, Taughannock Fall SP, The entire Finger Lakes area - particularly the wine country around Hammondsport (not just about the wineries - the lakes and hilly, scenic countryside are beautiful! It’s hard to go wrong. I’m not much for museums, but the Glenn Curtis museum on a rainy day might be a great break. The area is full of excellent restaurants too.
Distances are small enough to plan around your interests, with only moderate attention to geography. Find a centrally located motel to stay at, to avoid continuous packing/unpacking. I like Skaneateles, but it doesn’t qualify as central.
