Going to the apple in March, and I had this great original idea of shooting a pano skyline shoot. If anyone has had this same original idea, where would you recommend to be a great location?
Also what lens did you use?
TIA

I already asked my sister in midtown. Appparently, you cant see NYC from NYC.

I guess its like the forest and the trees.

Liberty state park in NJ. You can get the back of the Statue of Liberty in the photo if you want.
Also the teardrop memorial in Jersey City, NJ - the container ship port across from the teardrop memorial works great too.

That is not a bad idea. But I would like to offer a few suggestions. First, try individual buildings. Don’t forget a tilt-shift with a decent tripod. Don’t forget a good wide angle but try to avoid fish-eye. Get a short zoom (24-105mm) and a long zoom (150-600mm). You may wish to consider a helicopter ride and or a cruise.

Well, it depends on the perspective you want. You can see a lot from the 86th floor observatory of the Empire State building located at 5th Avenue and 34th Street.

There are actually two different skylines in NYC. One is in lower Manhattan and is accessible from Liberty State Park. The much larger and more iconic skyline, is in midtown Manhattan. You can't get good shots of it from Liberty State Park. For that, Weehawken is the best place to go. A very wide angle lens or the ability to capture multiple images for panoramas should be considered.

Certainly. I wouldnt call that a skyline but its surely a very worthwhile panorama. The OP should consider that view especially since he would mainly be in NYC and not NJ anywho. Since hes touristing mebbe that landmark is already on his itinerary.

Weehawken is the right recommendation. There’s a place along boulevard East called Hamilton Park that looks right down 42nd street across the River. The park is the site of the Hamilton-Burr duel.

A little south of Weehawken, is Steven's Institute of Technology in Hoboken.
Near the admin building is a nice lookout spot called Castle Point.
It's pretty much straight across from the Empire State Building, for a Midtown skyline.

J Owen Grundy Park & Promenade, Jersey City, NJ at the end of Montgomery. Go west one block & North one block & there is parking if you are driving (top left of photo) . If staying in the city, the ferry shoots over to Jersey City.
You might want to shoot from Brooklyn side also looking at the lower end of Manhatten with plenty of waterside parks near the Brooklyn & Manhatten Bridges. See photo & zoom in. I'm not on Instagram but you probably can find some great shots that could help you make a decision. Have fun, Tom

Staten Island ferry gives you a great view of Lower Manhattan, on the trip back.
Great shots of Lady Liberty also.
The promenade in Brooklyn Heights will give you fun shots.
Gantry Plaza State Park in LIC will give you great views of Mid-town, and the Pepsi sign

My favorite is of lower Manhattan (The Financial District) from the Brooklyn Pier. I used a 18-135mm wide open at 18mm. Its a short walk from the Brooklyn Bridge. Here a few examples
