Somehow I can't burn audio CD any more.

I never had to do that. Also, it seems that the OP explained that his CDs will play on some players and not others. Perhaps it's simply a hardware issue. (But nothing to lose by trying the format suggestion.)

Yes there is the CD to lose. If you format the CD you can't write to it any more. You can and should format a CD-RW but not the CD-R.

I never had to do that either. I just selected burn to play in a CD player.

BebuLamar, I’m no computer whiz so please don’t be offended if this is something you already know and do routinely-but back when I was burning audio CD’s, my CD-R wouldn’t play in other players outside of the computer until I “finalized” it after making the recording. That act also rendered it unchangeable.
