Software is useless unless it has hardware to run on, hardware comes in many types, sesor for example useless unless processor and program use it to max, lens however can live by itself but without self focusing, diaphracm control, vibration reduction etc
So to fully utilize hardware need software, wittness software updates we do to our gear cameras and lenses
My cop out is to think it is a system. You can’t separate contributions into hardware vs software. It doesn’t work that way.
That's pretty close... and newer and better hardware generally runs the same software faster.
Thanks for all the input everyone! And CHG canon thanks for the great tutorial! Much appreciated!
There are often algorithms which are known to be able to vastly improve results, but can't be practically implemented except on a supercomputer, but today's super in time becomes a home computer. Also, there are hardware methods even today which are simple and used where power isn't an issue. Many ASTRO cameras use thermo- couple cooling to reduce chip noise. This could be implemented on any camera, but requires lots of power. Even if a 24,000 mah power block would work? it would add a lot of weight. I believe some DSLR have modified by amateurs or put in cooling boxes. When you have a home observatory power isn't an issue. Go back to film and amateurs treated film with sensitivity gas or made cameras where the film sat on a block of dry ice. Many spectrometer sensors are cooled by liquid nitrogen for similar reasons.
