Been there. Very interesting and very close to some homes in the area. Land owners are not too happy.

I like Google maps near cities. Waze has interesting info such as traffic and police/accident locations, but is a battery hog for your phone. The most reliable using satellites only is the nav system in my old Mercedes. Even shows the number of satellites and the height above sea level. The downside is that you need a new DVD every decade or so to show new roads and changes and they aren’t cheap. The interface couldn’t be simpler - the Germans have human interfaces figured out. On the other hand, the one in my wife’s Lexus is useless despite the 300 page instruction manual. It does have one interesting feature though - the accent of the voice changes depending on what part of the country you’re in (seriously)

I remember when I was in the Navy, and for some years after, I would buy an updated Rand McNally Road Atlas for the 50 states. Navigated around quite a bit using those oversized pages. I even advised my sons to get them when they were starting to drive.

I have found Apple Maps running on my iPhone to be very useful, more so than the build in navigation in my wife's car (my car does not have built in nav).
If you are also wearing an Apple Watch, you get a tap on the wrist when it is time to turn, and a directional arrow will show on the watch face - easy to see without taking my eyes off the road. I can keep the phone in my pocket and never look at it.

Absolutely. Real maps have the advantage of a large perspective combined with fine detail viewable at the same time. Zooming in Nav systems doesn’t accomplish that. Although I use nav systems, there are paper maps for every state I routinely visit plus the southeast and entire U.S. in my glove box.

My trouble with iPhone GPS is that the GPS tends to miss significant turns nearly every where I go.
