On Friday, I took a long ride in a car that was using Apple Maps instead of a traditional GPS. I was impressed with the nice display and the fact that the driver could operate it with voice commands. What wasn't so impressive was the fact that the iPhone needed a good signal to navigate. Also, when the driver made a wrong turn, the display showed "Loading" for a long time before Maps got caught up. While it was loading, we went even farther in the wrong direction.

I use a Garmin GPS, and it's gotten better over the years. I could use WAZE or something similar with my phone, but I would have to pay for all the data I was using. I have TracFones, and I refill all three services when they run low - phone, text, data.

I have both the iPhone and Waze that you mentioned, however, nothing (yet) beats my Garmin.

I prefer Garmin. I can update maps whenever I want, I don't even need a phone with me, and I can talk to it. It just doesn't answer. And since all I carry is a flip phone, the choice is even easier.

I have used Garmin for quite a few years now and have had only a few errors with it. I do have a couple of negative comments about the map updates and the overall performance. My first Garmin glitched a few times and showed my messages and lists in a foreign (looked possibly Asian) language. It also led me to a wrong destination, only a few times. The map updates for it will provide maps for all of North America. My second one came with lifetime map updates, but only for the "lower 49" of the USA. I tried to use it in Alaska and there were no maps. It did work in Hawaii, though.

I always have trouble updating maps. The computer has trouble finding it.

Remember when map updates cost $75? that was awful.

Gave my Garmin away, got tired of recalculating (guess I should have listened better)! Also having to update the maps. Google maps works great, Waze is good too, I believe it uses Google maps.

I have both Apple Maps and Sygic Maps available with my '23 Ford F-150 and their Sync4 system and haven't had any problems...YET! I do like features from both apps, I can switch back and forth if needed but prefer to use Apple Maps most of the time. I've owned the truck since June and haven't had any problems including a trip to Quebec and back. Maps functioned perfectly. Heading out west to NM, CO and WY in two weeks so I'll see how it functions in areas of little or no cell phone service....

However, Sygic Maps has an off-line feature that I found by accident and leaves little 'breadcrumb' trails to show you the way back if lost in an area of no cell service. Cheers

The update cost(s) was the primary reason I gave up my Garmin. I've been using Google Maps on my iPhone exclusively for the past 10 years.

My introduction to GPS was in the AirForce. As I transitioned to the civilian world I used a Garmin and a moving map from FlyQ on my iPad mini. My Subaru has GPS built in but has not been updated in 9 years. My Garmin for my RV and my iPad get updated all the time. I'll use Apple Maps on my phone for short trips. Out here in Central Oregon cel phone service can be rather iffy. Real GPS (Garmin and Subaru) are always there leading the way. have friends that live back east and the only use the phone directions. The say that the phone is updated all the time and really wrong. I asked them what happens when you go through a tunnel, get off the major highways, or even in underground parking garages. I'f I need to get someplace. I know real GPS will get me there so I stick with it. ..Plan "B" I still carry printed maps.

Google has never let me down (well, once....). Apple has some fancy features (like aiming at a building and seeing the whole street while walking) but the features are rarely necessary. The trouble with WAZE is that as soon as it gives new directions, everyone uses them and you have a new traffic jam. Also, towns are getting "wise to WAZE" and crating one way streets to combat traffic.
Never liked Google corporately, but sometimes the 500 pound gorilla is your friend.

No GPS system, or device, is perfect (been a few years but not-perfect includes military used systems too); however, in my experience, Garmin comes closer to perfection than anything else. I don’t recall any specific negative with Garmin… other than the wires and mounting issues common to all non-built- in devices. The Last Garmin I had, included lifetime maps… the only problem there just took some learning/experience… couldn’t just get on line and load “all” the “American” maps… not enough memory in the Garmin to load… just a matter of eliminating Mexico and Canada each time.

For some time, at the insistence of my wife, both of our vehicles have GPS built in… and I gave away my Garmin, when I traded the last truck I used it in (& I had a secure mount and wiring hidden in trim and spliced in harness under dash).

Comments: Honda had an aggravating problem with toll roads… wouldn’t allow using them without CONSTANTLY telling us to take the next exit and couldn’t find a setting that avoided that issue. “NEW” Honda didn’t have 3 year old highways (multiple in Texas trip) in map. Multiple vehicle trip… Ford, GM, Garmin travel across several states. PROBLEM REPORT (test of Ford vs Chevy GPS… Garmin worked): Ford got confused and lost mid trip and did not allow entry of the destination “destination” (a long existing resort)… … Chevy took the lead an said “you are here” in the correct city but in a wooded area 4 miles from destination… Ford driver called resort, while we all laughed, and got lat/Lon and led us there. Separate trip, Chevy directed us to a 2dirt rut pig trail, which I didn’t take… multiple trips (w/Chevy set to prefer interstates) that Chevy would set a route as much as TWICE the miles… just to use all interstates… Garmin doesn’t have that issue (same trips).

I've used google maps for navigation for many years and have a lot of confidence in it. Also aware when I start to lose cell service to pay attention to where I'm going so I can find my way back. What I really like about Google Maps is the street view capability. You can use it to follow routes before you go on a trip so that you'll recognize features of where you're going. FYI, after the launch of Elon Musk's StarShip a couple of weeks ago, I found out that you can drive right through his Space Base assembly facility and within 100 yds of the actual launch pad on the way to a public surfing beach. The road was closed a day or two before the launch but opened up 4 hrs afterward. Quite a trip even if I never get there. Interested in trying it, put Boca Chica in the search box.
