Yet, I can't remember why I walked into a room or where I left something.[/quote]

You forgot your shoes.

The memory is an odd feature of the brain. When I was a kid, there was a kids' show that had Buster Brown Shoes as a sponsor. That was over seventy years ago, and I still remember the tag line. This guy belongs to my wife, but it was handed down to her by one of her older siblings. At about ten inches tall, he's hard and brittle (originally rubber), and has lost a hand and a leg, but still hanging on. She didn't know who he was until I told her:

I think that was a prop in a horror movie. The part the frog lost would also be lost from the last person to handle it. (Only kidding about that, but there's the basis for a movie. 😁)

A movie may be in order. Couldn't be any worse than some of the recent crop. I wonder how I know if he still has his magic twanger?

Well, part of the problem is the part of the brain, in the hippocampus, that encodes recent memories doesn't work that well as we get older. One trick is to remember to take a look at something, or make an effort to think about a topic. Its called mindfulness. So, when you go to the grocery store and park your car in a big lot, make a habit of pausing for a second and looking at where it is, instead of just dashing off to buy something, or make an appointment on time. etc. Or, thinking about the thing that has popped into your head, for a second. Else, easily forgotten. Like it never entered your head.

Below is a memory trick someone presented. Memorize this easy list. When you have to remember several items, associate a mental image with each item. I've used it - when I remember to - and it does work. The rhyming makes it easy to remember the terms. If I have to remember to buy a note pad, I can picture a notepad in a hamburger bun, etc.

One bun
Two shoe
Three tree
four door
Five hive
Six stick
Seven heaven
Eight gate
Nine line
Ten hen

As you get up to go to the other room state the reason for going, say it out loud 3 times. It works for me.

That is helpful, as are many of the other comments.

I have recently turned 79 plus a biking accident a few years ago that put me in hospital with two, yes two, sub-dural bleedings. The surgeon who operated on my head said that I was a very lucky man and if he hadn't seen me that day he couldn't tell me the consequences. Plus, Jeannie, my dear wife, says that I do go on about it!
